Best Filter Size for maxium flexibility but reasonable cost

Okay, needs some NDs, Polarizer, etc. I've got the kit lens which is 72mm but some of the full-frame lenses out there seem to go to 82mm and larger.

I would like to go one size filters with step up rings - I'm thinking 77mm or 82mm is probably best choice.

What is everyone else doing?
 
I think I will eventually shoot with 7d so I chose 77mm as it is significantly cheaper than 88mm most of the time. B+W MRC circular polar 77mm ~130$, 82mm ~200$. Fader ND 77mm - 108$, 82mm - 189$.
 
I'd say either 77mm or 82mm should be fine. I've got 77mm filters for both my EX1 and 7D and am able to swap them back and forth without problem. You might need a few step-up rings depending on the filter thread size on the lenses you choose.
 
I have a whole bunch of 72mm filters I might be interested in selling. I don't have a lens for them anymore.
