Hello, I recently bought a Gh2 , What would be the best type of filter to buy for point and shoot documentary work? like the essential one, I am using lumix 14-140, I dont have experience shooting with DSLR´s

cheers

I've never been the kind of "purist" who rejected the idea of using a filter to protect the front lens element from impact damage. With Canon and Nikon optics I always kept a UV filter on, in later years it was always the Hoya HMC or SMC with the most effective antireflection coating I knew of.

But with the GH2 I found that the best filter may often be NO filter. Seeing reports of folks having internal reflection problems with Lumix lenses and filters I began to notice stronger reflections when my Hoya SMC UV filters were in place on my 20mm and 14mm. So I took them off (deep enough lens hoods may solve this, I'm still testing).

However were I to anticipate working in an environment "hostile" to optics (windy with lots of dust, anywhere near salt spray, or around machine tools, construction sites, etc.) I would definitely have protective filters in the bag and would use them without hesitation, dealing with internal reflections later. When I work outside in daylight I often have ND filters available or on the lens especially if doing motion picture work.

I also love the B and W stuff. I would say that a UV is just a good practice... but if I were going to have to use one filter, especially outside, I'd definitely get a good quality ND fader. Simply awesome to give your GH2 a lot more control than you would get otherwise.
