Best Editing Program for HV20?

I was just wondering what people thought was the best editing software to use when working with the HV20. I currently use Vegas but I remember having to deal with the fact that it doesn't capture the footage in true 24p mode and I had to end up rendering my video at 30fps so the frames wouldn't interpolate so much.

I use Vegas 8 + TMPGenc 4 Xpress (for removing the pulldown)

Okay, but does that give me huge file sizes? Because I remember there was this other method to remove the pulldown but it made the files like 3x bigger when the m2t files were already big enough

The file size is smaller than the original one since you are removing extra frames. Of course if you change the compression, the file size will change. I don't change the compression. I keep the original settings.

If the file size is bigger, then it isn't as compressed. For example, I just started using the Cineform Neo to get my HV20 footage into Vegas as true 24P. It works great, but the files are quite a bit bigger. That also means they play back more smoothly, which is another plus in my book. And rendering is quicker too.

i don't know if it's vista or my computer or both but Vegas 8 and cineform are buggy as hell. V8 constantly crashes and cinefor can not reliably capture my clips. I have to use hdvsplit to capture then cineform to remove pulldown. Vegas 8 just crashes after a scene reaches over a minute long.

I am using vegas 8 with vista and before that I was using it with vegas 7. I've even used the beta version of vista with vegas 7 and didn't have a single problem. I will suggest you to uninstall vegas and install it back again.

What annoys me about vegas is that whenver I want to place a clip in between 2 others that it doesnt push one to the side like windows movie maker but you have to do each single clip one by one and if you have 100's its very painfull.

Tell me about it. It is like a nightmare. I couldn't believe when I first realized that.

Enable ripple editing and it will be done for you. It's a button in the toolbar, or it's CTRL+L.

Agree with the Cineform user...

I've just started using the Cineform NeoHD and codec about 2 weeks ago, after having used the open-source methods for the last year, and find it amazing. The fact that I can capture my 24p straight without all the work and time is worth the cost.

What also is nice is that I can capture it in NeoHD, then use both Vegas (when I'm on PC) and FCP when I use my MacBook Pro. I'm not typically in favor of a paid product when open-source software exists, but in this case it saved me so much time.

As for which editing program is "better", they're both professional editing programs but I find I use Vegas for doing rough edits, and I use FCP for final cuts (yes, pun intended, but so is the sentiment).

I use FCP to edit with my HV20, when I actually use it.

Its a lengthy process to remove the pulldown. And apparently its lossy. Though I haven't noticed any difference.

I capture it as .m2t then conform it to uncompressed avi. Which does skyrocket the size. I went from nearly 2 gigs of info to over 50 gigs. But that is only a temporary file. I remove the pulldown in JES deinterlacer. Which detects the candace in the pulldown because Canon hates us and didn't add in pulldown flags. Jes also returns it to a manageable file size closer to the original. I considered NeoHD but didn't deal with it, because I only use the HV20 here and there.

Hey Mattykins, can you explain to me how you do this? I'm buying an HV20, and I edit on Final Cut Pro.

What do you mean capture as .m2t? What is a .m2t, and how do you do this?

How do then conform it to an uncompressed avi?

Finally how do you then get the captured file into the JES Deinterlacer?

Please let me know how, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Ryan
