Best DSLR B camera for the AF100

Hey All!

So I have been fortunate enough to be pretty busy over the last few years shooting interviews for different projects/clients, ranging from corporate to reality TV sizzle reels. For reality, I love the AF100 and most of these gigs are out of town, so it packs up nicely in a carryon backpack with lenses and DSLR Bcam. For the Bcam, I have been using either a canon 7D, 60D, 6D or 5D... matching in post is a pain so it's time to get my own DSLR Bcam.

What is my best option? A hacked GH2 or a GH3?

I know that there are some threads here on this topic, but I still feel like I need some more advice. The GH4 is on the way, but I need something for a shoot that is 2 weeks away, so I can't wait.

I appreciate the input.

I personally think the Canon cameras match the Af100 fairly well when shooting "flat/neutral" on both cameras. I have had issues with getting Nikon cameras to match though.

With any of the mentioned cameras, I have found shooting a little chart at the head of each scene, and using Colorista II in post goes a long way in helping match cameras.

I know that doesn't help you pick a new B cam, but honestly we haven't had issues matching any of the cameras you are using for B work now with the AF100 in a very long time.

I use a GH2 as a B cam on occasion with the AF100. It works pretty well but you still have to grade them. Lot's of threads here on getting them to match. Both have m4/3 sensors and mounts so they play nice together.

Thanks for the input. I usually don't end up editing the projects, so I'm looking for something that matches as close as possible right out of the box (after tweaking settings)

To be more concise, should I consider the GH3 or a hacked GH2?

I would find a good, used GH3. It has a Micro 4/3 mount, so you can use the same lenses as your AF100. And the 50Mbps codec is NICE, as is the AVCHD for longer recording times.

In my opinion, a hacked GH2 can deliver great results, but it's too finicky and glitchy for serious paid work. If you're shooting an indie film, then sure, a GH2 is awesome. But for clients, I'd go with a GH3.

Definitely 2nd stripped-down AF. Cheaper and about the same size as a full frame rig.

I've used the GH2 with the AF for years now, works very well - FlowMotion v2 patch is trouble-free. GH3 has a longer lasting battery and a bit more dr.
