We use 3 HVX Cams but often need up to 10 incidental cams on location

What are the Best Consumer (B-C Roll) Cameras with HVX Cams?

What about
Panasonic HDC-HS300?

VS ?

great question. I have used the Flip Mino HD in a pinch. Shoots 720p, looks ok in the NLE, haven't taken it beyond that so my opinion on it is still incomplete.

low budget means not wanting to spend more the 1k per cam on the several incidentals.

that's why i thought of the HDC-HS300 because it seemed like it might do OK (plus I liked the potential of not having to offload all those cams!!)...just wondering
FWIW, im looking to replace the HV30s which have done OK for our purposes

plus who is going to realistically have multiple "offload persons" and offload stations....some of the promise of strictly P2 is not so clear cut

The big-budget productions I've been on (Discovery, BBC) use cheap HD handycams or lipstick cameras.

They don't even bother trying to match them -- they're meant to look like "B-roll" footage in the final product, and are put in locations you can't put a large camera such as dashboards or outside a helicopter, or places where the camera might get damaged.

The jump from pro footage to consumer footage is deliberate and used to portray intimacy or danger.

However the cameras they use shoot progressive and match the frame-rate of the A cam.

i like the idea of "lipstick cameras"....do you know a particular one that "shoot progressive and match the frame-rate of the A cam"?

The last shoot was a Sony unit with a matching recorder. Don't know the model. A previous shoot had a no-name model (security camera?) going to the analog input of a Hi8 or DV handycam.

You might want to look at the specs for the AVC-INTRA Panasonic cameras that sell for around 3K that have the same lens and body as the HVX200.

No such thing. There is an AVCHD model (the HMC150), but the lowest-cost AVC-Intra camera is the HPX300.

Ah, nevermind then, AVCHD is a bad codec to match up to DVCPROHD I though those were AVC-Intra for some odd reason.
Though in theory it might work okay-ish.

We sometimes use two Panasonic HDC SD5 camcorders (AVCHD) to complement our HVX200 and HPX500 cameras. This is not an ideal combination, I know, from a post-production point of view. The video is passed through a HDMI ----> HD/SD-SDI converter (at John Twigt's Workstation we have both the Convergent Design's nanoConnect and the Focus Enhancements MCSDI-1) for subsequent use in either FCP or Media100. A somewhat cumbersome combination, perhaps, but it does work.

PS. I know DJDecay just said "AVCHD is a bad codec to match up to DVCPROHD" but I thought it might be interesting for some readers to know that it is nevertheless a viable option.

at this point we are considering the Panasonic HDC-HS300.

mostly because it has 120GB HD so theoretically we could "set it and forget it" for several hours and not have to hire AVCHD wranglers - IN ADDITION - to having to deal with offloading P2 on main cams.

anyone know how long we could run the cam w 120GB HD?

And then you can lose all these 16 hours in one instant if you accidentally drop the camera on concrete floor. Or you can lose all these 16 hours without dropping the camera, just because the HDD stops working.

No HDD cams for me.

i see your point but if you are offloading P2 to HDD it seems about the same risk if you offload the small cam hdd at the end of the day (of course Im talking about using the small cams in a pretty tame environment --- might be different otherwise...)

but just to compare ----- the AG-HMC150 ---- Using the cost-saving AVCHD format to record onto SDHC or SD Memory Card media ---- if i bought this how long could I record without stopping/swapping

how about the hmc 40: Using just one 32GB SDHC memory card, a user can record three hours of full resolution 1920x1080 video and audio in PH mode, four hours at HA mode and 5.3 hours at HG mode. In the HE mode, the camera can record up to 12 hours of 1440x1080 HD content – all on a single 32GB SDHC card. could I just buy bigger than 32 GB card?
