Best compression for iPad

I've got an HDV project in FCE4 that I would like to compress so it will play well on iPad after I send it to YouTube. I"ve heard the best compression for iPad is 720p. I'm wondering what would be the best settings to make a Quicktime file of this HDV project so that it will load decently fast on the iPad when I access it through YouTube. My higher definition stuff just doesn't load well on the iPad.

Any help appreciated!

The Apple TV preset works great on the iPad. Don't have anything here right now to give you details on settings. Should be available as a QT Player Export or Save As - if not from within FCE4 itself.

Edit: Missed the part about "after send to YouTube" - just upload a 1080x720 H.264 file to YouTube.

720p has nothing to do with compression, unless you are specifying frame size during the process. 720p is a web-friendly, computer-friendly HD frame size. For compression, h.264 is what you're looking for. As for loading on your iPad from YouTube, a lot of that depends on your bandwidth. Since YT offers several flavor options for HD uploads (1080p videos can be loaded as 720p, 480p, and 320p), you can use the highest available setting that your iPad can handle.

You can export directly from FCE4 using QuickTime Conversion, but be aware that using QT Conversion in FCE/FCP is a slow and painful process. Your best bet is to export a QuickTime movie, self-contained, using current settings. Once that's done, use MPEG StreamClip to compress it to h.264 for YouTube. Use AAC audio, 44.1 kHz at 256Mbps. That will give you a good file to upload to YouTube.

+1 on the AppleTV preset in Compressor.

Except we're talking about FCE, which doesn't have Compressor. It has the Apple TV preset, but only in exporting using QuickTime Conversion. And I'm not sure I'd use that preset for uploading to YouTube.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. C2V, I've never used Mpg streamclip before but I downloaded it and checked it out. By compressing my FCE Quicktime Movie "to h.264 for YouTube" do you mean just using the Quicktime Conversion window in Mpg Streamclip? I don't see any "YouTube" setting, though I do see Apple TV, iPod, etc. What I am trying to do is create an iPad friendly file so I'm still not sure what sizes to pick in the video settings. You suggested some settings for audio but what would be the best settings for video. Remember I am just trrying to create a file to SEND to YouTube that will play well on an iPad in high definition. I am not trying to create a file to go directly onto an iPad. (which I'm not sure about either, but I guess that would be another thread!)

Any help appreciated!

There's not a setting for "h.264 for YouTube." I meant to convert the video to h.264, so that you may upload it to YouTube.

I think we're missing one big piece of the puzzle here: YouTube is going to re-compress the file once you upload it. It doesn't matter what you send YouTube, as far as larger HD files, as they will all end up the same in the end. Thus, you want to start with the highest-quality video you can, since it will be re-compressed.

Just compress it to h.264 and use a higher quality video setting. As for playing back from YouTube on an iPad, well... if it won't play 1080p YouTube videos, try playing them back at 720p.

thanks C2 I see now 1) just send to YouTube with best quality and let them do the damage or magic 2) the reason my high def stuff on YouTube doesn't load well on iPad must be bandwidth issues 3) if you're going straight into iPad through iTunes then compress first with something like the Apple TV preset

Now if I can just figure out how Mpeg Streamclip can convert HDV footage so that you get files that that will work better for slow motion in FCE4...ah, but that's probably another thread!
