best camera configuration

Here is one of the configurations of the RED on their site:

other than a lens, what is the most scaled down, single operator, field camera set up, that would be adequate for EFP/ENG use?

I'll also get the cage for studio work, but otherwise, that's about the config. I've been figuring on for EFP/ENG. I'd be curious how the LCD fits that setup though--I probably won't get the viewfinder for quite a while.

strictly for the field though:

I think you would have to maybe have a mic mount, and is the end of the rail where the battery and the hard drive go, or do you need something more?

Also, if your right hand has to hold the forward grip handle, how do you initiate recording? It looks like the right hand is not in a position to do anything but hold the handle since it is in a vertical position. (where is the record button located?)

Anything else?

ENG / EFP configuration

ENG / EFP configuration

This image is probably very close to what most people would use. As for the record button, its that red one under the viewfinder, or if you are using a B4 mount lens, those lenses have one on them. There may be other options available by the time the camera ships.

These red web site illustrations will be refined as we move forward. There are still some unanswered questions about these configurations we know, but we'll fill in those gaps in knowledge in due course.

I hope we can post some newer images in a week.

Hopefully you can also post some more full motion samples--might I suggest shots of the girls in christmas hats wrapping prototypes as Christmas gifts? :)

you'd probably be holding the camera up with your sholder and your right hand, and you would use your left finger to push the record button. then probably move your left finger back to the focus on the lens, or the follow focus... seems pretty sweet to me. but yeah a button on the handle would be cool too..

can i ask (probably gonna do this anyawy) when the new images are posted, can there be one without the hard drive on the back? i will be using flash almost always, so i would love to see a shot similar to the one posted above, but without the hard drive, and with a lens (preferably a lens other than cooke, because those are supposedly bigger than zeiss superspeeds right? i wont be using cookes). i could do it in photoshop i guess.. I LOVE RED hahaaaaa

actually could you just post an image of me, from the future, holding the red camera the way i plan on using it?

The only way you can hold the lens when it is on your shoulder is with four fingers on top, thumb on bottom. That means you have to remove your hand to press record.
No big deal, but the ergonomics would be addressed better if there was a record button for your right thumb, leaving the left hand to deal with all the lens adjustments.

I love the idea of the cage, but it won't work if your face is against the left side of the camera. Maybe half a cage on the right side where you could mount a shotgun mic.

If there is a HD EVF (which is a big part of the attraction to this rig) then you would probably want a completely different set up so you could get back from the EVF a bit, maybe even ditch the rail and go for the gun (which I have yet to see more photos of).

And what about the drive being somewhere more protected than on the back side of my shoulder where I can't even see it?

They might need some clothes on:)

Surely with red being fully manual the need for speed in focusing is crucial. If you have to press record with your left hand and then get on to focusing it is adding to the dificulties of achieving a quick focus. Please can we have the option of the red rails with record button on the handle.

The red rails apparently can be configured in so many different ways. There are photos somewhere that shows the battery underneath the camera for example.

Jim if you have the time (lol:) ) it would be nice to see the pictures in 3d adjusting as you watch to the most likely configurations on screen.

Do I infer from this (subject to change etc) that the B4 mount adaptor may have the requisite multi-pin connector to enable the rec button on the lens to work as well as powering the servo zoom?

Or will there be a remote socket on the camera that a simple push button switch can be connected to to activate recording?

The latter would be more flexible, allowing for a start/stop button to be mounted anywhere on the camera (going along with the Red modularity concept) but would mean adaptors/cables would be needed to combine this with 12v power to feed a B4 lens.

Is there any thought yet on timing for RedRail? It has been discussed a lot and some seem to be assuming it will be available at camera launch, is that reasonable?

Rec Button on a handle is what I hope to see of the RED 007 capturing Redpon. Like press the Unclear Switch with World Mission.

Will there be a record button on the right side of the body for those who are left-handed?
