GH4 Best Cage for the GH4 with locking device for it's HDMI connector.

Hi Ekin, my fingers just rest on it. I think it would be a better grip if the rod wasn't there, but it's part of the support and it's not a major interference.

I cant decide between the Varavon, Skier, and the Eazy Handle. I think ill need the support for the SB for my canon lenses when I get them specially for a 70-200 or 70-300mm im guessing.

Are you going to mount a matte box and rails? The bottom hole on that one is off centre with the lens if I'm not mistaken.

You are right, it is completely off, and so, no way to mount the mattbox and rails, which for use on the 2nd gh4 it would be ok, but I'm now in the market for another one...

If you were going to be mounting a QR plate to that generic cage, couldn't you just use the camera-mounting screw (well, a longer screw in that same hole, of course)?

Or, has anyone thought about drilling some additional mounting holes in line with the camera hole? It would be pretty simple for anyone with a drill press. I see the plate has a recess there though, might not be enough "meat" for adding holes...

Martin, I too have the Skier cage, though I haven't yet gone in the field with it. I like the cage except for that rod that not only slightly interferes with the grip (which I can live with), but that same rod blocks the AF assist lamp. Have you found that to be a problem?

GH4 Rig.jpg

Here is my GH4 rig so far.

Fhugen cage (First generation)
Juicedlink Riggy RM22 (upsidedown)
Rode shockmount with cold shoe adapter on Riggy RM222
Wooden Camera C100/C300 top plate.
Wooden Camera EVF kit
Nato rail attached to WC EVF arm for faster swapping of EVF to monitor
Zacuto EVF (need to flip it to get the cable on the opposite side.
Zacuto NATO clamp

I like this setup so far because it works great on a tripod and if I want to go light I can slide the EVF arm off with a quick turn of the 15mm rail clamp thats' holding it in. Then I can use the GH4 EVF. Still a light weight package.

having the Nato rail attached also makes for fast swapping out with my Ninja Blade for tripod shooting if I dont need the EVF. Outside the Zacuto EVF is a lifesaver. It's hard to use the GH4's EVF when shooting on a tripod. This is way better. Sam goes for all cameras with an EVF on the back like the C100. Being able to get it up or down and to the side makes a big difference.

I put the Juicedlink box upside-down because when I have a sound guy I want the cables to go away from me. I dont like putting the box under the camera. It also blocks the switches if you need to change settings on the Riggy.

If you have any thoughts on improving this Frankenrig I'm all ears!

Nice Erik :) do you have a shot of how you're using WC's C100 top plate on the cage? Curious why/how that's being used.

How - I mounted a cold shoe on the cage and then attached the Wooden Camera top plate to it just like it attaches to the C100.

Why - This lets me attach the Wooden Cameras UVF to the top plate and it fits perfect and gives me a few more mounting options too. It's basically the same setup I had on my C100 but now on the cage. It so much nicer to have the EVF or monitor to the side when shooting on a tripod. When I need to go handheld I take the UVF off and shoot with the GH4 EVF. It's like having the Wooden Camera cage without the cage. :-D

Ah, so you're using the top plate because the Honu cage doesn't have compatible hole spacing to attach the UVF mount directly?

Another cool option is to add some NATO rails to the cage. Then a Zacuto AXIS could be mounted too. I like NATO rials. I'm buying a couple to do just that.

Yep, love me some NATO rails as well :) Put them on all my cages. WC makes good rails and I've found the SmallRig ones to be good quality as well. I have the their 100mm NATO rail on the Honu which makes adding things like the Axis EVF arm or a top handle very quick and easy.

If I have some time, I'll take a few quick shots of the setup.

does the skier cage interfere with the speedbooster (canon)?
I cant decide between that one and the Varavon cage. for my gh4.

Swedish chameleon rig has nato rail build in as part of the rig on the left side. Just found out about it. Great feature.
