Hi Guys

I was wondering is anyone could let me know what he best cage for the GH4 that ill allow me to use a Speedbooster at the same time without me having to modify anything. Any advice on hdmi clamps or screwed down adaptor would also be appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi

I saw a video on Youtube where the guy had to take the foot off the bottom of the Speedbooster as it caught on the bottom of the cage.

I took off the foot of my speedbooster even if i don't use a cage since it will get in the way of my tripod plate. Take it off unless you plan to use very heavy lenses. I sometimes use a old and heavy nikkor 80-200mm f2,8 lens on it with no problems.

I took the foot of my SB to the grinder and removed the flange on the bottom. Now, I can install the SB without having to take the foot off.

I have the Viewfactor Contineo cage for GH4 that works perfectly with the speedbooster foot. In fact its such a perfect fit you'd almost say they were designed to work together.

Well yes, that is why it is removable. It's not like you are doing a mod. I have removed the base on all my SpeedBoosters since I use them on multiple cameras.

I ran a few tests with the cages I had on hand while having coffee this morning.

Wooden Camera Quick Cage (Small/Medium): No

The cage's base plate extends beyond the front of the adapter, so the adapter's support foot cannot be used with this cage. While this cage's base plate can be adjusted fore/aft, a particular position is necessary for the GH4's battery door to be accessible.

Fhugen Honu: Yes, but...

The support foot does not conflict with this cage, but the bottom of the adapter's support foot is not flush with the bottom of the cage. The support foot sits 1-2mm higher than the base of the cage. This means that a tripod plate cannot be attached to the support foot when the GH4 is installed in this cage. The tripod plate will need to be attached to the cage.

Furthermore, the front of the cage extends outward on either side of the adapter's support foot for the cage's anti-twist pins. This makes mounting the Speed Booster's support foot directly in an Arca Swiss clamp difficult or impossible.

View Factor Contineo: Yes, a perfect fit.

The bottom of the cage and the bottom of the support foot are flush with each other. This means you can mount a tripod plate to both the cage and the adapter's support foot (e.g. in the cage's 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 holes and in the foot's 1/4-20 hole) for a completely rigid and twist-free setup. As a bonus, this also resolves any play there may be between the adapter and the camera's lens mount, turning them into one solid unit.

There is also enough clearance to mount the Speed Booster's support foot into an Arca Swiss clamp. A short clamp might be ideal so that the clamp doesn't extend too far forward (the support foot is 16mm deep).

...You will have to remove your tripod plate if it's bolted to the camera, in order to remove the SpeedBooster, which is going to be the case for most GH4 cages. ( you can always remove the SpeedBooster tripod foot if this is an issue )

Just to muddle this issue more, there's also the Lockcircle Birdcage half-cage, which has an optional bottom plate that is designed to screw directly to the Speedbooster (replacing the Speedbooster's stock foot). This would be the absolute most solid solution, as both the booster and camera would be bolted directly to the same piece of metal, but as such would also be the slowest to switch out the booster.
