C100: Best all-around starter lens for C100

It's true though that it's a strange thing to do to put such a low down dirt-bag kit lens like the 18-135 on such an expensive body. There must be something better, right? But once you realize there isn't is becomes the lens cap as it has for so many of us.

The 18-135 is an inexpensive lens and is not razor sharp. But it is decently sharp and the IS is excellent. I would have paid more for a slightly larger, heavier, better built and faster version with the same focal range but Canon doesn't make it. I need the IS and the STM so this is what we have to choose from.

I really like using the 18-135 on the C100, especially thanks to the zoom iris correction which makes it behave like a fixed aperture lens. The only thing is, for me at least, the IS jumps a lot more than the IS on the 24-105 or 17-55. It seems to correct itself, or try to catch up to the camera movement, which results in the frame jumping forward.

Does this happen only when panning on a tripod? Or does it happen when shooting handheld?

I found the 18-135 to have much better IS than the 24-105 if you are panning or trying to maintain a steady shot. None of the lenses IS are any good if you are walking around with them or using them on a slider or crane. The 18-135 may be more noticeable than the 24-105 when the IS gives up while the camera is moving and the frame jumps, but that is really not how the IS was meant to be used.

Doesn't really happen when tripod panning, more when I'm giving the IS a workout with handheld or monopod. Anyway I realize I'm pushing my luck with the IS, but just something I noticed. Maybe my copy is bad - I bought it used.

Just saw a brand new never used 18-135 STM lens here on Facebook asking $350.00. I don't need one but thought I'd put it out there.

Lots of praise for the Tamron 24-70 f.2.8 in this thread. How's the vignetting at 2.8 on the C100? Any users run into problems?

For Run n Gun observational I have found the Canon 15-85mm f3.5-f5.6 a step up and sharper and better IQ than the 18 - 135mm STM.

15mm is actually interestingly wider than 18mm too.

I thought I would never say it but right now Sony is the one with more flexible lens options, switching from the FS100 to the C100 made me realise this.

As one example was given above, there are various 4.0 zooms with useful focal lengths, including a Zeiss 16-70 with IS.
Then they have the 35mm and 50mm 1.8 with IS (though they don't seem to be very good)
These lenses are all very light and seems to have better video optimised IS. The FS100 18-200mm OSS kit lens I really miss on the C100.

And then we even mount whatever Canon has with either a regular Adapter or speed booster.

Anyway, I don't think a lens that starts at 24mm is a good all round lens. It's not wide enough, it's hardly wide at all actually.

I'd say the 18-55 IS, or the 18-135STM.
Or as above poster said 15-85mm. I used it on the 7D and was surprised how nice it was.
