Beholder EC1 Gimbal

Looks great Noah!

I find IBIS on the A7 cameras removing a lot of small imperfections most of the time so I'd leave the IBIS on. I also find a slightly higher load than 1200 grams to work out fine on the Zhiyun Crane.

I took the leap and bought the Crane, and it definitely works just dandy with my 1620g setup. Did a test last night upright, and one this morning inverted. Will post a clip.

Edit:
Here's a clip from this morning's test run in inverted mode (vimeo link).

Zach, this is really interesting. I am hoping to buy the Crane for use with a 5DIII and 16-35 weighing in at around 1500g. Everwhere I look says it's above the payload, but I think it could still fly. Have you any other tips since posting this comment?

I've used it a bunch with my 1620g setup (5D3 w/24-105), and have gotten great results. Somewhere on Zhiyun's facebook page I think they mention a max of 1800g, that seems more in line with my experience. I've found balance to be much more important at 1620g than at 1250g, if my payload isn't balanced the motors might struggle a bit and be less stable when the Crane is held in some positions. But when balanced 1620g seems fine.

I'm going to be experimenting with some old Russian M42 wide-angle primes soon. I'm not zooming the 24-105, but am using it set to around 35mm, so it would be nice to have a lighter option so that balance is less critical.

That's great news man, thanks! Just helped make the decision final. Cheers!!

hello there,Ive bought ec1 and upgrade firmwire to 2.61b3 ,and then turn back to 2.60b4 but it starts working awkardly and unfortunatelly I didnt back up the old configurations :( ,Can anyone send me default profiles, and default imo calibration files? you can take backup from simplebgc software.Thanks.

For any of these gimbal stabilizers (Beholder, Crane, Pilotfly) does it matter if the lens and/or camera has its own stabilization? For example, is it better to turn on or off the IS for a Canon 16-35 f4 IS lens or the 28 f2.8 IS, etc? thank you.

I agree with nyvz that it depends on the image stabilisation. In this clip Beholder EC1 Gimbal Stabilizer Test with Mirrorless, DSLR and Camcorder Cameras, the image stabilisation from the Fuji X-T10 Mirrorless with IOS lens is smooth and really helps with the footage, unlike with a camcorder's image stabilisation, it seems jagged. I think the single handle gimbal design is not really suited for heavier camera systems, the ergonomics is just not there, even with the handle accessories attached. It get's too tall and top heavy which makes it difficult to control and keep steady.

There's a review on the Beholder EC1 at learnlikeme.com/index.php/beholder-ec1-gimbal-stabiliser-review-includes-dslr-mirrorless-and-camcorder-camera-tests/

Your problem isn't the IS, it's the EC1 default factory settings, they are broken unless you fix them manually unfortunately. You shouldn't need IS that much but the default EC1 settings transfer every step into the tilt axis of your footage and is basically unuseable. Basically you need to get and learn SimpleBGC and fix the problem, or return your EC1.

Has anyone found a decent tutorial on how to tune the Crane. I see lots of reviews but nothing in depth on how to tune. I have tried my crane with a Sony A7rii, a Sony 10-18mm f4 and a manfrotto 501 plate system. I think this combination was too heavy. I got a lot of jitters especially when walking and turning. Then I tried the same set up but with a Sony A6300 and it was a lot better, though still a few jitters visible. I've got the unit well balanced. Or, does one simply return the unit over and over again until one ends up with one that is satisfactory?
