With this much pixel information, any aspect ratio can be achieved by cropping, but a lens-agnostic anamorphic adapter that mounts directly in front of the sensor would allow scope with less of a reduction in resolution, and save a step in post.
I did the math on this and given the dimensions of the RED sensor, cropping top and bottom to 2.40:1 actually uses MORE pixels than left and right cropping the sensor for the use of (2:1 squeeze) anamorphics. I know this is counter-intuitive, but it's true.
Unless you like the funky optical characteristics, slower speed, larger size, and greater weight of anamorphics, cropping top and bottom and using spherical lenses to achieve the scope format is a better option IMO.
Your conclusions are probably correct, but it seems to me you are speaking of pre-existing adapters. If one were created and optimized specifically for the dimensions of the Red sensor, surely better results could be possible?
Also, an adapter that sits behind the lens wouldn't use nearly as much glass, so the increase in weight would be negligible. Some of the optical problems with in-front-of-the-lens anamorphic elements, like flaring, would be minimized as well.
Yes, I was definitely referring to existing anamorphic lenses. Anamorphic zoom lenses typically use rear-mounted adapters (and pay a two-stop price), but many primes use anamorphots that are front-mounted to maintain a reasonally high speed. A custom-designed, rear-mounted anamorphic adapter with an appropriate squeeze ratio that maximizes the real estate of RED sensor may indeed be useful, particularly if it is matched to the RED zoom. It's worthy of exploration.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. My knowledge is limited. But if you look at the pic of the RED 300mm lens, the lens protrudes a few inches back from the lens mount. A portion of the lens is going to be stuck into the RED camera. I don't know if there will be space inside the camera for anything to go between the lens and sensor. But again I don't know much or understand what you guys are talking about. Just thought you should take a closer look at the 300mm lens to get an idea of things.
