I'm looking for good editing software for a beginner. I currently have Premiere Elements 4 but want to update and gain more features. I'm reading terrible things about Elements 7 and 8, mostly about stability problems. I'm reading about similar instability issues with Pinnacle. Would Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro be a good choice for a beginner? I'm afraid something like Premiere Pro would be over my head and budget.

A good start would be to download the trial from Sony Creative Software and give it a go for yourself.
Yep, give it a try. Just remember that it does things a bit differently than Elements, so not everything will be in the same place, be done the same way, etc.

I think your best bet is to download the trial version of Vegas and Premiere and see what works best for your needs.
