Beautiful Scores

What are the most beautiful orchestral film scores, you've heard?

I'm playing Horner's music from A Beautiful Mind right now, and I think there's a lot of really wonderful stuff, there.

Empire of the Sun and The Four Feathers are also pretty great.

The score to Jules et Jim come to mind. Although it's not extremely orchestral, the score to The Motorcycle Diaries is quite beautiful.

I really enjoy A BEAUTIFUL MIND also, was just playing it yesterday as a matter of fact.

Another great score is for THE VILLAGE. I don't remember who the woman is that plays the violin throughout the score, but it is FANTASTIC.

That is my #1 score to listen to while writing, followed by BEAUTIFUL MIND and MEET JOE BLACK (another beautiful score, IMHO)

It was Hilary Hahn. I found that ironic, because in the featurettes, they said they wanted her because they wanted a woman's interpretation of the music, fitting Bryce Dallas Howard's character . . . but all through watching the movie, I thought the violinist was male.

I like a LOT of Horner scores, even if he does get a little repetitive at times.

A little? Listen to the scores for Wolfen and Aliens back to back. Large parts are IDENTICAL. I even remember watching an AFI student film he scored in the early 80's and recognizing parts of Glory in it. He's done some real good stuff, but too often does hack work.

A great underappreciated score is Patrick Doyle's score for Much Ado About Nothing. His score for A Little Princess is also very good. I'm not a fan of much film music that comes out these days, especially for action films. They're often too fragmented and cacophonous because the music has to fight against the sound effects, so it just becomes more noise. Listen to the music during the truck chase in Raiders, or the asteroid belt chase in Empire Strikes Back. That's real music.

Passion in the Desert - Jose Nieto

Sirens - Rachel Portman

The Road to Wellville - Rachel Portman

The Time Machine - Klaus Badelt

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

The score has been used in the trailers of so many other movies, I've lost count.

Punch-Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine both by Jon Brion. His work is so organic and beautiful, it reminds me why the movie experience is 50% auditory.

I used the score to, "Cousins" for some films I made back in the 80s. Not a dry eye in the house when I ended the film with that score.

Same here. These are my two favorite OSTs. I like the Fountain also.

If you listen to "The Last Man" from the Fountain and have a slow conversation with somebody, everything sounds poet and beautiful.

Pan's Labyrinth also has good music. Also, Dances with Wolves.

"Kicking Bird's Gift" and "The Love Theme" are both beautiful.
