GH4 Before I pull the trigger on A GH5

I don't think either one of those is a "style". They're just different tools, each of which can be used to shoot many styles.
Style of shooting/working, not style of work product. People comfortable with a large-ish camera on their shoulder typically work quite differently from someone slinging a DSLR-style body.

You're both right, which is why "run 'n' gun" is a terrible descriptor. It's really the difference between ENG style shooting, and DSLR style shooting. Both can be run `n` gun.

That's an interesting observation. ENG is run'n'gun but so is holding a dslr in your hands and shooting. I would argue that the latter is more run'n'gun, as it's really as crude as it can get. But it is a special kind of style. ENG entails smooth zooming inside of the shot while dslrs don't for instance.

In my opinion shooting with a dslr is a pain. I like cameras a lot more. But that being said, we did buy the GH4 when it came out and have successfully used it for run'n'gun work. I constructed a shoulder rig for it that works nice but when you consider the final cost of the rig and all the bits and pieces we just might have of bought an FS7 IMO. GH4 is a small camera and that's why it should be used. It's also cheap, if you don't buy a recorder, a rig, an evf, preamp, etc.

So, my opinion: get the GH5 if the DSLR style of shooting is what you are after. Otherwise get a proper camera if all the hoops that you need to jump in order to shoot fluidly with a dslr are to much of a hassle. To me, the whole rig thing is a bit to much for ordinary, nothing fancy, shooting days. Lots of pieces, wires, handles, etc. that I don't really have the patience to deal with any more tbh. I would really just prefer an ENG body with a nice ENG zoom lens for most of the stuff that isn't narrative or commercial.

I have been practicing the manual zoom with my m4/3 lenses. I think it can be done!

My absolute only concern is weather or not the speedbooster ultra(i know the XL cant so far) can electronically control EF lenses. The second i have confirmation, they have my money. And i feel im not the only one in this situation.

I know we won't know until we know, but it is highly unlikely that it will until the firmware is updated. To my knowledge there is only one EF firmware shared between both models.

I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement from Metabones. Myself being new to GH line, I'm not sure how prompt Metabones usually is with announcements or the like. I'm wondering if they will update their new line or release a brand new one. I'd happily pay for a new one with an ND option but wouldn't be upset either way if they release or update the old one I would just love to know if it will be done and when.

Did you buy the GH5 and if so, how does it perform as a run and gun camera? I generally prefer a camcorder with a lot of accessible buttons. But I believe you can achieve good results with most quality gear.

If the GH5 AF is good enough and using some well behaving lens the GH5 may be good run and gun camera.

It would be even better if the auto exposure modes could show basic exposure information to user.

The irony is that the automatic features are made so people don't have to worry about the numbers/information, settings, how things work, etc.

So taking photos or video with P,A,S or auto iso are for users who dont know or worry about exposure triangle at all??

I thought these options are for easier adjustment, not for stupids. Even professionals use S or A or auto iso. iAuto or green full auto modes are for stupids.

I don't know, I don't care, ha.

Cameras have all kinds of outrageous quirks with them that drive people mad.

Ain't the first time someone wants something that no one else in the world probably cares about...but if it would help you, don't let anyone else tell you different.

If a camera would not show exposure values in all photo modes everyone would say it is broken.

Fortunately when shooting video with GH5 6k photo it shows all information all the time.

I am with you Vesku. I like seeing what the camera is deciding to do so that I can modify as I see fit. It has also taught me what the engineers think is the sweet spot for performance and based on any particular situation is a good guide to modify. Most of my video cameras do this and with my upcoming purchase of the GH5 would like the same.

Very interesting discussion about Run n Gun! I use a Panasonic HPX 300 for almost 9 years now, and that is for me a real run n gun camera (with wide angle lens!). Quick acess to everything, from ND-filtration, over white balance etc. to focal length too.

But i also started with GH2,GH3 and GH4. And they are great, just different and "slower" to handle. Not perfect for run n gun.

I also use a Sony PXW-X70 for more than two years now, and this little thing is the "child" of the HPX 300 and the GH series. Not perfect in either way, but a really good combination of these two worlds.
