Was watching their new road trip special, and something caught my eye...

Just thought it was pretty cool that this little guy is getting used on high-profile shows like Top Gear!

This makes me so happy! We're in the middle of shooting a TV show for local markets, and we're solely using GH4s. This just proves that the line between consumer and professional is getting more and more blurred every day.

Oh and Top Gear is one of my favorite shows. Especially the episode on Reliant Robins. *HAHAHA*

It's interesting how quickly the market changed. When the dslr revolution hit, everybody and their brother began what they thought would be a new career by starting up production companies, shooting ads, films, etc... But then the shallow dof fad quickly faded, leaving them to realize the out of focus shots hid their lack of ability to shoot properly. Now we're left with a few years of out of focus video that will leave future generations thinking people of 2008-2011 had eye issues. :-) Seriously though, It does seem to have slowed a fair amount. The market weeds out the hacks pretty quickly, and that seems to be the latest trend. I can't count the posts from a few years back where people with no experience started, "making a movie thread" only to write a post or two. They realize the work involved is daunting and quit before they actually begin. Or they run out of excuses as to why their work is sub par and sale their rigs they spent a year building with nothing to use it on. I feel like thats an addiction all to it'self. Gearaholics 12 step program.

So true! Now, if SHAKY-CAM would fade away, we can get back to the business of QUALITY!!!!

Now, if SHAKY-CAM would fade away...

Halle-freakin'-lujah brother.

And after that, the 'roving eye' style which unnecessarily moves the camera all over the scene instead of focusing solely on the important elements. (AKA, The Office)

And then, the unnecessary zooms and other camera 'adjustments' that should all be done before you roll.

And don't forget that a while back when they did a road trip which included an octocopter for aerial shots it had a GH2 on it! :)

Oh yeah! We all know what we are tawkin' bout!

I think the first time I noticed BAD CAMERA work going mainstream (for reasons I will never grasp) was "NYPD BLUE" TV show. I never watched it... but crossed paths with it channel surfing... all I saw was unstable camera shots like a weak, bored 9 year old was holding the camera.... What the... when did BAD camera become the NORM?? It's cool for minute storming a beach in Private Ryan, or the occasional explosion, or stalker view in some horror flick.. but a WHOLE SHOW like that?? Saddens me so much it has become this.

I actually don't mind The Office's style. It was supposed to be shot like a documentary which usually features all interviews as stationary, and the rest as off-the-cuff ENG style shooting. Some documentaries use very stable shots, but that wouldn't work with the dynamic of The Office.

the 'roving eye' style.

It's called hand-held. It's seen in verité-style documentaries and simulated in narratives to convey on the scene/in the moment "reality." As with any shooting style, its an artistic choice determined by many factors. Like shallow DOF, it can be overused, abused, and incorrectly used with cliché and bad results.

stuff I've seen is more like "attention deficit eye". It USED to have a place as an artistic choice... now it is just lazy and everywhere because everybody else is doing it.

I think TMZ is now the king abuser (i know im off topic)
