Basic questions - so bear with me

We've got the DVX and love it. Lusting after the HVX. My wife reports (and shoots her own packages occasionally) for a San Diego tv station. We also produce kids' artist music videos for Noggin/Nickelodeon. So

From what I've read of the HVX I'm ready - but I'm not clear about a couple things even though I HAVE read the FAQs.

1 - How do you move the clips on P2 into a Mac?

2 - we won't be shooting HD for the near future - mostly dvcpro. Do we need a souped up Mac for that or will our DP G5 handle that without issue? What about our older G4?

3 - is the standard DV which is shot to tape any better than the dvx? RE 16 X 9, because it is "native" can I assume that those images are better than the squeezed DVX method of creating 16X9?

I think that's it for now. Thanks in advance for your forbearance.

1. PCMCIA/PCCard slot, Firewire, or USB.

2. G4 is fine for SD, but as always newer = faster

3. 480i from the HVX is better than 480P from the DVX. 480i from the DVX is better than 480i from the HVX.

Thanks - a few clarifications needed - you say firewire to get the P2 clips in. Am I correct to assume that you are referring to importing clips off the p2 cards while in the camera via a firewire cable from the cam to the mac? And to be clear, this is essentially a file transfer?

What about the question of native 16X9 (DV) from the HVX vs the "fake" 16X9 from dvx?

thanks again

Yes, that's how you would import files, it is a file transfer (not "capturing" footage).

Standard DV in 16x9 is way sharper on the HVX than on the DVX. 4x3 video is more of a tossup between the two, although the DVX does 60i better than the HVX does.

You aren't transferring clips, however.

You are transferring the contents of the p2 card which are subsquently imported into Final Cut Pro and rewrapped in QT format.

Thanks all - I appreciate this forum a bunch - we'll surely be joining the ranks of HVX users very very soon. By the way, I talked to Barb at AVS in San Diego today - their current price is $4825 (including the "free" 8GB card)

Price sounds awesome but of course if anyone knows of anything better out there from an authorized dealer I'd love to know!
