basic question about 7d's files/ codec being mixed with hpx-170

I have a HPX-170 now, and plan to get a 7d soon. My computer is an old powerpc mac so i cant get the new updates. I don't have the apple pro-res options that i hear so much about, so besides getting a new computer... what happens if you stick whatever the 7d kicks out right into the timeline? and since it's already more compressed than the hpx footage, how does it work when exporting? seems like the 7d stuff would look weaker but I've seen alot of videos that mix the 2 and don't see an issue.

Just checking the basics before I invest.

Thanks!

and while we are on the 7d, in 60p is that slow motion no audio like the hpx 60p (30pn) or not? Does shooting in 60p help stop jello cam? I would think 60p (at normal speed) looks different than 30p on a tv, but I've never knowing watched the 2 to be able to compare...

I have a PPC G5 as well and I mix HVX200 footage with 7D all the time. I convert all of my 7D footage to Prores422 with MPEGstreamclip, http://www.squared5.com/ It's free, easy and you can use it with your Oldschool like I do. I have FCP 6 and I can edit both DVCPRO HD and Converted 7D files in the same timeline without issue. You could also use streamclip to convert them to DVCPRO HD but I don't know why you would when you have Prores 422 at your disposal. From the images I have seen Prores holds up better to heavy grading. but that could be wrong.

If you drop the 7D files directly into the timeline you may have to render which takes forever and then it probably won't play back without the jitters. From what I understand it takes a very fast computer to edit H.264 natively.

As far as the slo-mo, my clips have sound after I use Cinema Tools to convert the 60i footage. I don't know If I'm converting correctly because CT is still very new to me, but it does have sound. I don't know if that has anything to do with Jello though. Almost all of my lenses are IS/VC so I have not had to deal with jello yet. But I know I will.

On the export, just do it how you normally do. I just export a QT file for unimportant stuff that is going to DVD, But I use compressor or Mpegstream Clip for everything else and burn DVD's through DVDSP.

Hope this helps.
