bars and tone

i'd like to laydown bars and tone on my tapes before recording to them. i did this in a previous life when working with betacam tapes. is this advisable? how do i do this with hv20? i am working in fce.
 
u can create bars and tone in final cut (pro not sure about express) and than print to tape. its on the far right side of the viewer. its an A, click it and itll say bars and tones, and much more! but this is on pro, not sure if express has it.

Yes, bars and tone available in Express
