Banding!

hello
i really love this camera. but there is a lot of banding in the gradients on my apple monitor. is it due to the computer monitor? if not, what are your solutions to reduce it?

I haven't seen any banding.

Must be your monitor.

well even in prores i can see some banding in the sky

i think its called banding. its like posterization in photoshop. on all the gradients. in dv or hdv. is it the limitation of video and compression? or do my camera have a problem? i cant see it on still images, only when its playing.

What you have there is the limitations of 8 bit video. (HDV, DV, DVCPRO HD are all 8 bit) It's particularly noticeable in shots that are totally out of focus and where the image noise can't act as a natural dither. In addition, it looks like you have the typical 35mm adapter vignetting going on and that will exacerbate the problem.

i was not sure about that.
i wanted to buy a hvx200 to resolve that problem but it seems that i will have the same banding with this camera too, right?

Virtually the same under the same circumstance. Try to lose the vignette as Elton set that just exacerbates the issue.

A1 also has a sky detail function that is specifically designed to knock this on the head in skies.

But on a side note I found it helps smooth out slightly uneven bluescreens as well for those intereted.
