"Banding" on T2i photos. Why?

I shot a timelapse over the weekend with my T2i and notice a "banding" pattern on the wall.
I may not be using the right term, but it was stepped - like there were too many colours for
it to blend smoothly. Considering it was a blank wall, I'm confused.

The camera was set to Large, Fine. It was a 2-second exposure at I believe F18.

I've never experienced this before. Any advice on what I did wrong would be appreciated. I've included two photos below. The first is the original, the second has been graded to made the banding more prominent for you to see.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

Compression artifacts. Large featureless surfaces will do this. Shoot in RAW next time and you can avoid this.

Yep, compression. And, after shooting raw, one needs to be cautious in compressing the images in preparation for a timelapse. The computer does a better job than a camera but it is still a matter of give and take. I once had to repeatedly compress raw images I shot of a sunset until they emerged banding-free.

Thanks Perrone.

Normally I shoot RAW for photos, but since I was taking 1440 of them, I thought I'd go with Large, Fine.
Didn't even consider there might be artifacts. My mistake.

Appreciate the advice, and the quickness of your reply.

Best.
