FS7: Baked in look

If I wanted to record a baked in Look similar to the Alexa, where do I get the lut and what are the steps to load it into the camera and bake it into the footage?

thanks!

My client wants to do very little color corrections n in post.

If you want to bake in your look, you have to enable the look in the output settings for the fs7. When you are in CineEI, go to Video, Output and enable the LUT for SDI 1 & Internal Recording.

The alexa is usually colour corrected in post using a LUT in a similar manner to EI in the FS7

Your client wants the footage to look like wood and then not correct it? Because that is what an alexa looks like until you correct it.

What the alexa looks like.. alexa log

Assuming you want an Arri 709 look.. Morgan I doubt the idea is a LUT baked in to look like Arri log C :).. which slog3 is actually very similar too in the first place.. go to this guys site.. for 25 Euro,s or something like that he will email you 3 arri "look" lets you can burn in..

I have them and they are pretty good for a burn in "look".. and are apparently pretty close to Arri Amira 709.. load onto SD card.. down load to user 3D LUT,s.. apply to internal recording.. press record.. there is a folder structure you have to follow too.. have to look that up..

Those LUTS look good, Donny. I'll purchase them. I'll load one of them into the camera and make sure that it is recording the LUT internally. I know that the camera needs to be in CINE EI mode. Which log mode does it need to be in?

Thanks!

I believe BertLUTs are optimized for S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3.

Note you'll limited to Cine EI's preset white balances, though if your handy with LUTCalc you can build LUTs for other color temperatures, & gamuts.

that makes sense. In EI, you only have 3 white balance options. I wonder why they just don't let you white balance in that mode?

This is a bit off topic, but:

We don't have an external recorder yet, we just record internally. Do you guys ever have an issue recording slog 3 in 4k and then using the LUT in post? Does the post correction ever break the codec and introduce noise or banding?

thefilmaddict,

re potential post gotchas the thing I would suggest checking with LUTs is the input levels. Resolve, Speedgrade and Colorfinale have differing approaches to the levels expected to be supplied from the clip.

Sony's looks (and the internal user 3D MLUTs) expect to be supplied S-Log3 (or S-Log2) as data range, and output legal range values. This fits with Sony's recommended workflow in Resolve. A complication with Resolve is the default 'auto' clip range setting. In a workflow paper Sony recommends explicitly setting clips ot 'data'. XAVC files seem to be OK, but since S-Log3 recordings remain within the constraints of legal range, it is possible that 'auto' may get confused by recordings to other codecs or to external recorders.

Anectdotally, I have heard from a couple of LUTCalc users who seem to end up at the wrong levels under 'auto'.

Basically, to ensure consistency from recorder to Resolve, set levels to 'data' in Resolve's clip attributes.

For Lumetri / Speedgrade you can use my LUTCalc app to convert a LUT to appropriate input levels,

Ben

I believe its because as slog footage has be graded, keeping to 3 preset WB makes that process easier .. I pretty much used to only use the pre sets anyway in custom .. so not really a problem for me.. but it would be nice to be able to give them a tweak like the Arri can do in Log

Excuse my lack of techyness but, What is the difference between burning a lut in on cam, and applying the same lut in post? I assume the lut point is to get a good 709 style clip so you can then grade to your wishes. Granted if you burn it in on the cam, then you're stuck with that as a starter (which you can use ANY lut if you don't burn it in) but if you burn it in with say...allisters lut in cam OR then use the same lut in post....is there any difference IQ wise?

There si no difference in IQ . The reason to burn in for clients who don't want to mess around with LUT's in Post . That's a lot of people in my experience. Of course doing it in Post allows far more flexibility. Most of my clients don't know what they're doing though, so I'd rather burn in for them.

It can also be seen as a way of insuring that the image is not "made" into something you don't like or ever intended to be the look.. when your not there to contest it.. a bit desperate I know.. but it must have happened a million times.. eg the producers s girlfriend thinks a soft pink look would be "awesome "..

But not when its broadcast/shown to clients.. and everyone sees,s your name on it.. and producer never gets another job.. girlfriend leaves producer .. producer goes into real estate ..

Then you marry producers ex-girlfriend and she makes you bake in soft pink look into everything and eventually you can't take it anymore and hang yourself.

Better bake that Arri look in to save your life!

If you are there and can" verbally " slap the girlfriend ,when she says it would look better in pink.. then you dont need to burn it in.. the problem is when you are not there.. and your great works are being sabotaged ..!..
