BAD PIXEL...canon GL1

I have an older Canon GL1, that I use as "B" cam for weddings.

Discovered I have a bad pixel top center on the chip. Only shows up at high-gain, against a dark background............but it's too dangerous to use this cam on a shoot.

Can this be repaired, or is it better to buy another GL1 or GL2?

I will check with BHphoto today.

Advice appreciated,
Jeff

Sending it in for repair would probably cost half the value of the camera. Might as well sell it and upgrade.

I understand there may be a pixel compensation program built into the GL1 to masked out this bad pixe. I "know" some JVC cams have this built in software.

Im trying to find out if the GL1 has it.

the GL 1 has no hot pixel compensation ...

i just had my CCD's replaced by Canon for $764.19 ( note: it was covered by a GE service contract)
beware that IMO Canon has a hot pixel problems with GL1 CCD's ..
before 2006 the CCD's had been replaced either 3 or 4 times ( all paid by GE) .. this year they were replace in Feb & April by a 3rd party ( again paid by GE ) - 3rd party said that in Feb they the had to get 2 sets of CCD's -1st CCds from canon had hot pixels so they sent it back ...
this time GE decided to get Canon to fix it ... the camera is now good for 2 hrs ... hitting 3hrs - a hot pixel is shinning ...
this is 4 times prism/ CCD's replaced and all had hot pixels within 1-3 days of receiving the camera ...
now if i was paying for this i would be pissed ..
i can highly recommend GE service contract ...

Wow...what a story! Lucky for you that you had a company like GE backing the extended service.
I think your story has me strongly considering NOT fixing the GL1. I had considered getting a GL2 to replace the GL1....but now I dont trust the Canon CCDs. I may just get another DVX. That would solve some post work problems trying to match the two cams............but I will miss the zoom range of the GL1/2.....as a "B" cam at weddings.

Anyways thanks for the information. I hope things work out for you.

GE Contract

GE Contract

I had a GL-1 a couple years ago with a hot pixel (I agree, I believe it should have been a recall-able offense), and had a GE service contract - though the individual GE referred me to in my hometown refused to work on the camera. GE contacted him - and after he hung up on them, they took the camera in, shipping paid, and replaced the CCD. Did your GE contract have you send the camera directly in, or did you have to take the camera to a local fixit shop? Just curious...

re: this GE service contract.
Is this GE as in General Electric Company?
Id like to check into a extended service contract on my new DVX. Will you guys please send me the contact info. jeff@downsouthstudio.com or post here.

Thanks,
Jeff
