Bad People Suck

I'll have to agree with Chuck and John on this one. You don't need to confront every problem head on. Actually, you probably shouldn't do it unless you have overwhelming superiority, and you don't have that right now. You did the right thing by dealing with it through the authorities. But there's no need to endanger yourself.

I know you're passionate about this guy, but sometimes it's better to lose a battle so that you can live on to fight another day. There's probably thousands of people in Thailand just like him. That's probably why prostitution is so rampant. There's demand and there's supply.

Think of the long term. You can do a lot more good with your teaching. Tackle the real problem. Educate the people so that they can raise themselves out of this mess.

Exactly.

Hey PK, you got hero status in my mind. The people who say to avoid confrontation are absolutely right, you’re risking everything over one scum bag. Why bother, it’s someone else’s problem, you can’t be expected to save the world can you? What about the good work you’re doing now as an educator, changing minds, as well as protecting those minds with helmets? Are you really ready to see all that end?

Of course that’s not the path you have chosen, the path you have chosen usually ends in martyrdom. Your path flies in the face of logic and good sense, it follows a higher motivation. I can't in good conscious discourage you from your course, and I can only hope I will have to the courage to follow that path when the time comes.

What I want to say is, you know the risks, you make the decision, but be careful.

PK, I just want you to know that I am behind you %110... wish I could be there to stand with you... your motivation is noble and justified. Be careful, and God speed!

Chuck, I know you weren't telling me not to do what I believe. Not all of this was directed at you and I agree with a lot of what you said. :) I just enjoy rambling.
Hi PK,

Thanks for rambling; it’s generally a sign of a compassionate person. I have traveled and stayed for extended periods in Thailand, Cambodia, Korea and Vietnam. I think I probably felt as strongly about Cambodia as you appear to feel about Thailand, and when you care, and are passionate about helping people there is nothing more frustrating then not being able to help in every situation.

Without being melodramatic :embarasse , and I think you’ll know what I’m talking about, the line between annoying someone who is taking advantage of these people and them taking serious action against you is very thin. You cannot stop this scum bag and if you could there will be another to take his place. It sounds like you are already making a difference in the lives of your students. What happens to that progress if you can’t continue because something happens to you as a result of this incident?

I think I know how you feel – the only advice I’m trying to get across is don’t fall on your sword for this scum bag. Continue to focus on the things where you can really make a difference and if you feel you must take this guy on, be careful. Don’t think that simply going to the police will resolve this. Because the value of human life is so different in this culture this guy may put you in a position where you have to take some sort of action that you’re probably not prepared to take which could result in serious injury, you being deported or ending up in jail.

I admire your compassion and dedication to helping people. There are way too many scum bags like your neighbor in this World and not enough people who care sufficiently to actually do something. Don’t confront this guy directly, outsmart him.

My boy's are on the way PK........

Loki, John, mmm, Daniel, Spidey, SumFun, Terry, Josh, Mythfit, Pale Rider, and everyone else - Thank you all, very much, for your words of support. I don't feel as alone now. The thai people haven't been very responsive to what happened. They don't show much emotion or support. It's difficult to know when you do something wrong or something right. You only have yourself (and DVXuser). :)

Chuck - I think you and the others who echoed your message are right. This guy isn't worth getting killed for. I sometimes get caught up in the fight I forget about the big picture. Thank you. There's better things that can be done. I met an American woman who worked with prostitutes in Philadelphia and the AIDS department at the UN. She and I might start some programs that will start educating the young girls and finding them good jobs. Give them some options.

UPDATE: The people in the building say Ali will be leaving next month. The police came and told the manager that Ali is not wanted in Nong Khai. The petition my students and the tenants of the building wrote must have worked. And a little name dropping never hurts. This one scum bag will leave Nong Khai. Yes, there will be another loser to replace him. BUT alteast there won't be two scum bags here!

LOL! :) Thanks Pookie. The guys condo is located right on the Mekong river. Those guys could park their boat outside.

Yeah! were still all comeing to sleep on your floor till he's gone. DVXuserfest at PK's house!

Hmm -checks map- Thailand, thats near South Pasadena Right?

Now your thinking!

Remember, as you said yourself, this culture took 900 years to develop, it will take a while to change.

So which do you prefer, DVCProHD or HDV?

I saw the scum bag the other day and I shouted "LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT!!!" But nothing happened. :)

Pookie - "Next to Suitland." You crack me up. :) RE: Photo - Curious, why is the guy on the right pointing his gun at the water? Is he afraid of the giant squid?

Sad to say, the problem will really need to be attacked from the other end, anyway. Groups have gone in, there and elsewhere, to try to stop it...but a lot of times it's a matter of "what do they do to support themselves/their families instead?"

Same goes for the "sweat shops" in China and India. It's all very well for us to say Don't do that. But, if the alternative is worse...like not eating...will they listen?

Can you stop the sex tourists? Sure. And what will probably happen? More girls will be exported in private (permanent) sales, rather than local hourly rentals.

Bad situation.

PK, congratulations on winning one small battle in an ominously large war... your passion and determination have paid off! You have proven that one man can most certainly make a difference. Keep fighting the good fight man, and know that your boys at DVXUSER have got your back! ;-)

Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times has done quite a few stories over the last couple years about the sex slave/trade situation in parts of Asia. Unfortunately the Times charges to read archived material and columnists on the web (if you don’t subscribe to the paper), but you might find some of the content interesting. There’s a multimedia presentation on the web page that I’m going to check out as soon as my boss quits hanging around my cubicle asking me annoying work-related questions. There's no charge for the multimedia stuff on the right side of the page.
