Bad news from magic lantern for 7D

From what Tamrell wrote today on his wikipage,

It looks like canon did not appreciate Tamrell's personally brewed 5D mark II firmware to complete the HD-SLR'S with the audio capacity of video cameras. Thus closing the gap between their video and photo products.

The word from the canon administrator to the 7D software engineers crew must have been: If I catch the guy who didn't put a firmware signature verification in the 5D mark II, I will cut his b*lls.

Now we have a software engineer out there who is hacking our products to make them better. What's happening is that our whole video department is turning their thumbs because our video products are now obsolete!!!!

Make the 7D uncrackable... Your jobs are on the line.

Now we have a 7D fully armed against hackers with signature verifications all around. Probably the only way to make a break would be to make a huge petition to canon or have an informant from the inside leaking some code to Tamrell.

:badputer:= me thinking of my 7D right now.

Where is this on the Wiki page? I can't find it. I would think something this big would be front and center.

If true, I'm sure there is some way around it. There always is. And I think such adamant opposition from Canon would make the general public even more upset that they are crippling their device through software, which would motivate people to bypass it.

Will it work on a 7D?

Short answer: Not yet. But work is being done on producing a Magic Lantern image for the 7D. Currently we can generate signed firmware images and have dumped the 7D's ROM for analysis. If someone donates a 1D Mark IV, I suspect the same techniques will work to produce a version of Magic Lantern for it.
While we can generate signed firmwares, we're not able to cause a clean reboot to start our process with the RAM copy of the ROM startup code. We can't even jump back into the ROM, so at this point we're not able to run our own process alongside the main firmware image.

Autopilot (Tamrel) updated FAQ's section today.

Here is the info that made me place the post: It's the first time he writes this explanation on where he's at with the 7D magic lantern process.

From the magic lantern homepage under Will it work on 7D:
While we can generate signed firmwares, we're not able to cause a clean reboot to start our process with the RAM copy of the ROM startup code. We can't even jump back into the ROM, so at this point we're not able to run our own process alongside the main firmware image.

Ok here is what I think. A petition from angry customers to canon, back in the days the 5D mark II was only automatic in video mode, actually made canon offer a firmware update to correct the situation.

Couldn't we do the same thing now with a simple request: add manual control to sound as well? This petition could have only one line, easy to accept by canon if we make it sign by 2 million people.

Viral promotion thought the web make's it easy. :)

AH! The joy of internet and forums! You never know when a new source will bring up useful info!

I can't wait to have a convenient audio system around.

the text below is new about not being able to jump back to the ROM etc
trust me...I check it every day :(

The new firmware update for the 5D Mark II will most likely hit in mid March, as most are predicting. It supposedly does add manual control to the audio input. If this is true, then there is no reason that Canon wouldn't launch a similar firmware update for the 7D at the same time, enabling similar features.

Also remember, just because Philip Bloom is reporting something (actually canonrumors.com) doesn't mean it's totally legit. Just hold off for at least another couple of weeks and wait and see what they do with the newest firmware for the 5D Mark II.

Loic, did you just fabricate the little story in your original post? If so, then say so. You made it sound like there was a real problem going down between Canon and Magic Lantern Firmware. As far as I (and anyone else) can tell, they are making headway with the ML firmware, but still have a few issues, which I'm sure the 5DmII firmware had issues as well.
