Was this BW or color film and if color, 'scanned' B/W or color film and using a simple desat operation to get the monochrome look?

The tones look pretty flat to me, like color film 'printed' monochrome. So I'd probably play with levels and gamma to get better dark tones and highlights with good mid tone separation.

Otherwise it was a funny story.
