Backup Original P2 or Consolidated files in Avid

Hey everyone,

Just started post on a film using the HVX and Firestore. I'm editing on a Windows Avid machine and was wondering something.

Do people generally keep a backup of their original P2 files or is it smarter to make a backup of the consolidated clips within the AvidMedia Files Folder?

I would think It'd be easier to restore your project in case of a HD failure, by just copying the files back to the MXF/1 folder and let Avid rebuild the database, than to do the whole "Import P2/Import Media" method. But no one seems to do this (backup mxf folder), so what am I missing?

Will Avid re-link all the media if you have to re-import and re-consolidate all your original P2 media? I'm just so used to re-batch capturing any lost media, that I'm not sure which of the two options is better.

Thanks,
ADam

Back up the originals, they are your digital negatives and allow you to switch to a different editing system in the future if you so desire.
