I will admit that up to this point I have been sloppy with my digital backup. I've recently taken the plunge and decided to use my HVX and go fully digital and forego the safety net of DV tapes but I am left feeling very paranoid over the safety of my footage.
Most of my shooting is long stints in an education establishment. I shot 12 hours of footage over two days in the last few weeks and all of it is important and needs to be retained. I've cut off what I can but I'm still left with a good 300+gb of footage that I need to keep indefinitely. At the moment it's just on my 1tb BigDisk and mirrored onto my internal HD's in my G5. This isn't ideal as I have another 4 days of similar footage to deal with and if I do the same I'm going to quickly fill up.
My masterplan (lol) is to recycle my current workstation (2.5 dual G5) as a raided filestore once my new Macbook Pro arrives. Realisitically though I won't be able to put more than about 2tb of storage in there, again that's going to fill up relatively fast. And even THEN I need redundancy so I'm looking at mirroring all that somewhere to be safe.
So what do I do with all this data that I need to retain? I could archive onto DVD using Toast's spanning technique but that's an awful lot of DVD's and an awful lot of burning time. I could encode all my footage into acceptable file formats as realistically it doesn't *need* to stay at full quality and then move to DVD but this could tie my mac up for days in encoding and then burning time.
The only other half realistic solution is the idea of a bluray burner, I see LaCie has just released one and it's around £700, I could probably swing that but are bluray burners anywhere near mature enough to put my full confidence in?
Is anyone else in a similar situation? What do you do?
