Back up your drives!

Some things you learn the hard way.

My scratch disk just took a dump. Mac fails to recognize the disk. What are the chances of data recovery?

Sounds pretty dead. It's time to ask yourself, is what's on there worth $2,000. If it is- send it to Drivesavers and most likely you'll get everything back.

If it isn't worth $2,000- well what can I say, backing up is good for the whole family...

it's not worth that much. i took off a few projects last week because it was making odd noises, ordered a G-Tech that's in the mail to dump all these files onto. Just didn't make it in time. :(

What's the proper way to back up files? I have the G-RAID 3 here, set it as my scratch disk. What else do I need to do to avoid this situation again?

If it makes a kerchunk, kerchunk noise on startup try freezing it -- wrap it in paper towel, then in a ziploc bag, then in a towel (this is to minimize condensation) and freeze it overnight. If it mounts the next morning, grab all your stuff off before it heats up and crashes again.

I used incremental backups using Carbon Copy Cloner to a couple of small 2.5 inches drives in an expensive enclosure.

Cost me about one hundred dollars total.

that's weird, someone else told me the exact same thing...

The freezer method has worked for me in the past. If you're planning on chucking the drive anyway, it's certainly worth a shot. But once you do it, and if you do get the drive to spin up again, you better have somewhere to copy the files off too immediately. Don't do it and then realize you don't have space to move everything!
