back to sony with the a7sii on my current project

wrote a post earlier this year about selling my a7s and how it had easily been my favorite camera that i've owned or operated. since selling it i've actually really enjoyed my nx1, but when i was tasked with finishing up a movie started last year, we went with the a7sii as the primary camera for the project. yesterday we were rained out of the exterior wedding scene, so we shot a few other scenes to pass the time. as the day was ending the rain stopped, and even though it was 8:30pm we decided to try and shoot some close ups to get out the way. once everything was lit and dressed and rolling it was about 9pm and I was again amazed at the power of this little camera. anyways this particular scene has a bit of an nda surrounding it, but our marketing guy ended up filling in for the priest who left when all the extras were dismissed earlier in the day, and he said this would be OK to share:

we had a light on a dimmer several feet behind and to the left to help simulate a setting sun, and a 2k fresnelite 1/2 blue and bouncing into a 4x4 to generate a warm fill. i love how the sky is still totally visible in the background... and so is the background for that matter... at 9pm at night.

well thanks for letting me share, this is one of my favorite camera communities, I'm sure i'll get another sony soon.

Thanks for the update! Having been away from the A7s, and now back with the A7sii, do you feel like in the field of small(ish) DSLR systems (body + lenses) there are better options than the A7sii for narrative work, or are you coming around to settling on the A7sii (or possible successor?)? I know you mentioned the NX1, but what with Samsung not looking super committed to staying in, I'm not sure how many would want to jump on that bandwagon with having to buy into the whole system (lenses etc.). Have you worked with the GH4? I know it's kind of apples and oranges compared to the Sony, but where else would you look for a DSLR system?

Honestly I think it depends on your typical projects and work flow. Like I'd probably not shoot internally on any Sony mirrorless because I've seen what an external recorder can do for the image. I didn't think I'd care about ibis, but it really helps mitigate the terrible rolling shutter when handheld.
I've never shot on the gh4, but I did on the hacked gh2 and the image was impressive. However with my lenses it made more sense to go S35 or FF.
When I shoot it's usually on a decently hefty rig with follow focus, matte box etc, so the size between the body's of the various cameras hasn't been enough of an issue either.
Nx1 out of the box has an amazing image with great color and almost unparalleled sharpness... But it lacks latitude and aftermarket support. If I absolutely had to buy now, I'd probably get the 7s2, but I'm interested in the prospects of the Canon 5D4

Interesting! I gave up on Canon, a day late and dollar short with video in the DSLR form factor, seems Sony is much faster with the "latest and greatest". Of course if you have a lot of Canon lenses, hope springs eternal. I'm on the Panasonic treadmill GH series, but the low light situation is killing me, so I'm thinking about going Sony.

I sold off my GH4 because of the ISO 800 and up noise too.
