B&H Video of C300 and external recording

http://youtu.be/CBdbRex_FPM

Informative. Look at 13:20- The host mentions that the C300 may not work well with an external recorder for 24P. What are the implications? Will it work with the other frame rates? Why not 24P?

The film XXit used an external recorder for some of their shots with heavy graphics work. Not sure which model they used, but clearly they didn't have an issue.

@cowpunk52 - I've sat through two live Canon C300 sessions and viewed one on the internet. Both Tim Smith and Larry Thorpe have said publicly that XXIT used CF cards recording on-board the camera for the project. Tim also stated that XXIT did do some tests with external recorders but decided that there was not a difference quality worth using the external recorders. (The SDI out is 8 but... etc)

Of course... others mileage may vary...

Ditto - All the films used only the internal 50mb 4-2-2 MXF codec.....and all the ASC DPs said it "held up better than expected" or "it performed beyond spec"......

I don't know where Cowpunk got the information about the external recording but if you read the words of Scott Bryant who posted this video http://vimeo.com/34794196 it seems that Stargate Studios did use a Cinedeck for some takes when shooting XXIT.

Nope.....I've chatted with Dana numerous times....I talked with my good friend Tim Smith@Canon and he was basically the camera tech on all 4 films.....they just used the CF cards/internal codec.

So what's with the discrepancy, then? We've got one story coming out of Stargate Studios that they did use a Cinedeck on some shots, but then another story saying that they didn't. Is there any way to get direct confirmation from someone who worked on the film? I don't think anyone has anything to gain by spreading mis-information.

I just read an article where it stated they recorded 59.94 to an external recorder and then rev telecined after...

Actually a very easy workflow, just shoot and do a batch rev. telecine after.

Straight from the horses mouth:

Stargate explained that the composite shots were recorded externally to an uncompressed media recorder (Cinedeck) for match back to editorial’s picture. They explained that this gave them the clean keys needed for XXIT’s demanding composite work. Currently the beta version of the C300 only outputs 59.94fps, so Stargate had to complete a reverse telecine to get back to 24fps for the compositors and editorial. Canon explained that a selectable output frame rate would be coming with or soon after the C300 release.
