B&H Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Mic Kit, Worth it?

firstly - remember this isnt a feature grade mic kit. it is more or less the LOWEST acceptable mic for broadcast, and thats only if you use it well.

that said, the ntg offers quite a bit of bang for the buck.

without adding up the value of that kit, remember this:

the ntg 2 is not too expensive on its own, but of course you NEED accessories like wind protection and shock mounting to get any results with it.

k-tek is a bloody fantastic brand. you wont be sorry. that said, that boom is quite short - will it be long enough for your needs? DONT SKIMP! theres nothing worse than a boom that is too short for a shot you want.

Can't comment on the kit (I avoid "kits") but I've had the NTG-2 for about 6 months and I'm very happy with it. Great bang for the buck!

yes buy the kit, i work at bh in pro video, im at work now actually
everyone gets the kit, good deal if you consider what the shock mount costs alone

Hey guys I found this pretty well rounded mic kit from B&H and I just wanted to check if it was worth it before I went ahead and purchased it. I was looking for a versatile shotgun kit and I thought the accessories in this kit would suit my needs, just wanted to check if it was a good deal or not. Thanks for the advice in advance!!

If that's what you can pay, then by all means good. You still need to add additional accessories.

I was looking at this kit, but the boom is alluminum, I've heard they can be noisy.

Pole itself is okay. Compared to all the other brands like VDB, K-tek, Gitzo, Ambient, and Lightwave, not as good. Also depends on what microphone you are going to use.

You put a 416, 4073a, CS3-e, CS1, ME66, 897, KMR81/82's, SE300 it'll be fine. Oktava 012 okay, might introduce fair amount of handling noise. Schoeps 641 no way, sensitive!

the collars on the rode pole are terrible they would be ok if you dont have to change pole length often but after i used a k-tek pole it was a night and day difference .dont waste your money and save a little more and buy the low end k-tek at least.

Rode NTG2

Rode NTG2

I have the NTG-2 and it works great. Use the Rode boom and it has'nt given me any headaches. The shockmount is very important. The pickup sound on the mic itself is great for the money. 15ft away in 25/km winds with a deadcat over it, picked up the sound of hands grabing a leather jacket in a fight scene we shot last week with no issues whatsoever. Nice & clean for post.

Get the kit - best low cost set up - IMHO

Steve

I would suggest buying ala carte and picking up a better pole and full zepplin/w shockmount (Ktek is good and cheap).

It would be great if Guy at DVE Store would put together a package with the Ktek accessories! ;-)

Cheers

As an FYI for anyone interested; B&H are running an "NAB Special" on the NTG-2 Kit for $489.95. Code is #NAB08RQRVE which you enter in the search window to pull up the special price, which is good until May 2.

Let's do it! List what you would suggest and I'll put it all together with a special DVXuser discount.

Dammit...I ordered this a few days ago, right before they started doing that discount

Has your order been processed and has it already shipped? I know they we're closed for Passover holiday, so if it's still in their system you could try giving them a call with the NAB code and see if you can get the discount. Best of luck. Either way it's a great mic./kit and I think you'll be very happy with it.

It's shipping right now. I had wanted to get it shipped before they shut down for the week but think it might be too late. It's scheduled to be delivered on tuesday

I'm looking to buy a kit like this as well. I have been looking at the Rode NTG-2 and the Oktava 012. I would love if Wabbit gave his input to Guy and we got another package set up on DVestore.
