Awake Trailer

Re: Awake Trailer

Fantastic! Tell me was the last scene where he is standing in front of the building DVX!? Was the lighting natural? I loved it so much! 5 Thumbs up!

Re: Awake Trailer

Wow! Very impressive!
Nice rack focus in the beginning.
Good luck securing the grant.

Re: Awake Trailer

i remember you posted some grabs of this a while back. so cool to see the trailer. completely different from what i was expecting. has a cool vibe to it. good luck. looks great. reminds me of a color version of pi. (that's not a bad thing) and not a comparison either.

in respect to the titles...i like them, but wouldn't mind seeing them grunged up a bit, and when they get hot, maybe introduce a little yellow into them. they look a little pink right now.

love the SLR footage. great mixed medium piece.

Re: Awake Trailer

Friggin' sweet. The DVX material looks very good uprezzed. It blends nicely. I definitely want to see more. :D

Re: Awake Trailer

wow thanks everybody for the feedback. Let me get to some of the questions.

I was thinking you meant in stop motion style, but wanted to make sure. That must have taken forever!! Did you do 24 pics a sec?

The stop motion did take forever. The field scene is about 35 seconds long and it took about 4 hours to shoot. Basically, the Digital SLR was set to take about 1 frame per second. I would figure out how long it would take to do a certain move, and then I would multiply that time by roughly 24, but we were very generous and usually added an addition 45 to 50 frames of footage for each part.

How'd you do the real jittery effect while he was in the field?

See above post. :)

-Thanks

-Thanks as well, I'm glad you liked it.

Wow. That looked really good. I just wish the trailer told a bit more of the story.

I would love to show more of the story, however, this is only a 12 to 15min short, and having a really in depth trailer just takes away from the film. I showed the trailer to my digital imaging class tonight and got some good feedback as well. My professor suggested shortening it a little bit more.

looks very very nice, cant wait for this one. The acting looks suspect though.

Thanks Darkstyl8. I am always looking to better my films, I am continuously learning. I am the first to admit that I am not a great director. I'm a real pushover. My real forte is directing photography and lighting. That is what I love to do. What did you feel was lacking for the actors. I still have some more shooting to do so I would appreciate the feedback for futer shots. Thanks again.

Fantastic! Tell me was the last scene where he is standing in front of the building DVX!? Was the lighting natural? I loved it so much! 5 Thumbs up!

Yes, that was the DVX, all was shot 4:3 and cropped/resized in post. The lighting was natural in that scene, we were shooting in downtown Seattle, so I didn't really have any way of setting up lights. We got lucky however as it was a slightly overcast day and really helped the camera reach into those shadows.

Thanks Jkc123, you have no idea how many times we had to shoot that particular shot, John the guy in the red PJ's thought it was quite humerous that he had to stand expressionless. :)

in respect to the titles...i like them, but wouldn't mind seeing them grunged up a bit, and when they get hot, maybe introduce a little yellow into them. they look a little pink right now.

I know exactly what you are saying. I have been trying to grunge them up, tried adding some grain, but it just doesn't have the effect that i have been looking for. good idea with the yellow glow, it might add to that grittyness.

Thanks Dakota

Very nice indeed! Did you ADR the girls voice?
Yes as a matter of fact all of the voices in the film are post recordings. I have been shooting that way for a long time. I love to have the voices completely separated from other sounds, as it allows me to do more with them in post. My shotgun isn't that great, but I do have a wonderful condeser vocal mic that I use in post. I still have a lot of ambient work I need to do on the voice tracks, as well as most of the other sound effects. I know that it is a slow and tedious way of working, but I enjoy it. Do you have any suggestions as to the quality of the voice?

Friggin' sweet. The DVX material looks very good uprezzed. It blends nicely. I definitely want to see more.

I was amazed myself at how well the DVX handled itself next to the ultra rez of the Dslr. I got to view the footage today on a 12 foot screen projected from a HD projector, and I must say that it surpassed my expectations. I'm sure, had I had acccess to the anamorphic adapter in some of the longer shots it would look better, but I am happy with the results.

I love it.. See, This is the kind of stuff that keeps me motivated.

I really am in debt to all the wonderful film makers on this forum, as I feel exactly the same way about all of the footage that i have seen on this site.

Thanks to all who gave feedback, and sorry if I missed replying to your comments, they really do not go unapreciated.

Re: Awake Trailer

The imagery is looking great (and the teaser is top notch). I wish you all the luck in getting your grant and would like to see this film. :)

Re: Awake Trailer

amazing, you dont need me to comment on the shots colour correction or lighting, its amazing.
in regards to the font, perhaps make the typeface smaller and more subtle, It also looks a bit tall, digital type faces suit being more square, I can see the type of effect you are going for I think it would maybe be better to have the numbers and letters scrolling and then slowly coming to rest on "Do you dream" like an airport destination board, at the moment it looks like you've done a scrolling text animation in the backround then faded your actual title in over the top.

also, Instead of fading the font in, try burning it in, like a colour burn or something, I agree with adding more yellow, it would be cool to see it working like a cigarette burn in 16mm.

I could probably work something up for you Ive got about 8 years experience in design/film/animation. a BTEC diploma in design and a B.A(hons) in design for communication. I dunno anyway, you probably wanna do it yourself, but moving graphics is one of my fortes and I'd be happy to give you any assistance I can.

Re: Awake Trailer

The trailer is great. Nice mix of visual styles. The colors in the field and with the end shots are incredible. Definitely has a surreal feel to it. Although, the girls voice is too clean (no ambient noise) and the ringing sound was annoying. Maybe a different sound effect would work better. Like a distorted alarm sound. I don't know.

If you're in Seattle, where was the field located? I don't recognize it from any of the parks or locations around Seattle.

Once again, it's a great trailer. Can't wait to see the final short. Good luck!

Re: Awake Trailer

scharky that was really amazing, great job! would you mind sharing a bit your process of color correcting? I use vegas as well and I am hard pressed to ever come up with anything as nice as what you have done. So I end up using Magic Bullet, but I am starting to get tired of those looks. (as well as render time) - you mentioned layering in Vegas?

thanks and keep it up

Re: Awake Trailer

John, Thanks for the words of encouregement, I can use all the wishing I can get.

Adam, I appreciate your suggestions, I am currently re working the titles, and hopefully should have them ready to go soon.  As far as what they are supposed to be, the film uses a digital alarm clock in many of the scenes, I havn't actually shot any of them yet.  However, the opening scene will actually be a closup on an alarm clock.  I wanted to mimick that look with the titles.  I like the burn in idea, I'll have to see what I can come up with.  I think at this point in the film I am going to try to do the titles myself, it is something that I want to get better at as well, however, I have written down your email address, and and if I'm in a bind I'll let you know.  I at least might be asking you for advice. It is always good to talk with someone who knows what they are talking about.  I have the problem of going school in the middle of nowhere, and lets just say that the local folk aren't the most tech savy, unless that comes in new ways to milk a cow.

PK.  Thanks for your critique.  The voices definatly have some more work needed.  I am going to hand them over to my sound man to let him deal with it.  Then, if they sound bad you can just blame it on him. :).  I live close to Seattle, in a town called Ellensburg, the field was located there.  It's a good place to live as far as movie making because I have large cities, rolling hills, planes, mountains, dry and wet areas to shoot in.

Young, H lee
Boy you want me to share all my secrets? ;D.  It's hard to say exactly how to get a specific look, as each look can be done many different ways, however, each result may be slightly different.  The reason I work with layers so much is because I have a very strong photoshop background.  I have found that with working in layers, you can apply different effects to each layer, and then have the ability to completely manipulate to taste using layer opacities and layer compositing.  For an example.  On the scene where you see them leaving the house, it is composed of three video layers.  The bottom layer is the main scene, color correct to the approximate look that you see.  The second layer is my bloom layer.  I duplicate the video track and place it on this layer.  I then add gausian blurs and glow effects to this layer.  the reason i do it on a separate layer is that i found I can keep all of the shadow and highlight information, yet still have the look that I want.  On the top layer is my contrast, and final color corrections, set with an overlay composit and opacity.  This allows me to fully control the parts that i want to be contrasty and those that i don't.  It also allows me to make harhser color corrections without posterizing the footage, as these corrections are done on a different layer than the original footage.  The rendering is slightly longer doing things this way, but i fell the benefits are worth the wait.  My best advice is "experiment, experiment, experiment".  Find out how the compositing layers affect footage, see what affects look good in certain areas, and how best to presereve the dynamicisism of the original footage.  I wish the best of luck to you in your endevors.

Re: Awake Trailer

scharky, wow thanks for that awesome reply. I was literally going "ohhhhhhhhhhhhh" when you talked about layering and stuff inside Vegas. I had NO idea that Vegas could do those transfer and blending modes. Anyways, I tried it out yesterday and was pretty excited. No results yet, but like you said, "experiment" So I will do that. thanks for the great tips man, I'm indebted to you

Re: Awake Trailer

is vegas5 = premier pro1.5 + after effects pro 1.5 ?

looks like vegas is an NLE and also a post production tool ?

which do u prefer ?
I am noob to motion graphics - but I have a strong PS background, I shd feel comfortable with adobe products but somehow feel comforty with vegas... ::)

if u can, can u tell which software can be used for which suituations?

whats ur workflow like.... ur work is eye-opening!!

Re: Awake Trailer

Vegas offers a lot of After Effects like features. The workflow some people have on Vegas is, when something can't be done with Vegas, they export uncompressed video. They use that material in After Effects to do some special tricks. That's been rendered to uncompressed footage. The AE output is been inserted on the Vegas timeline for integration with the rest of your project.

Re: Awake Trailer

I like your use of color to me it is the second most important factor in the mood of a movie, we are biochemical and different wave lengths , or color, effect us chemically  by playing on these we can effect heart rate and adrenaline levels.  For me the first cut seemed jumpy. from her sitting down you can tell she looked over then a cut to her looking straight and then looking. It was distracting to me. The rest of the shots look very cinematic, the composition is sold as well as camera movement. I know this is only a trailer and i might be over critical.

The lettering was creative and effective maybe added with a soft sound-effect. I like how you didn't do the cliche of tilting the camera to the side. The movie looks fresh and the difference in lighting from the charters dream to conciseness was effective.  I would like to see a-little more maybe either dialog or another piece in you shoreline.  I know this is a short and making a trailer is difficult to say the least. I hope my input helps you in your movie.

I am 3/4 finished with a screen play for a full length feature.  It is a sci-fi - fantasy. I am going to be purchasing a agdvx-100a in the next 3 months or if there is a new camera 1080/24p without mpeg2 compression because I need a clean key.  But the real question is after my screenplay is finished I am going to copy-write it.  My next step is trying to obtain a grant. I live in Upstate New York, do you know the best means to get any kind of funding?
