Awake Trailer

Ok, here's the deal.
I made a promise 5 days ago.
Today I shall make good on that promise.

The Teaser Trailer (only trailer I will make, it is a short after all) is now up. There is a catch, however. I did not want to rush the person who is orchestrating the music, however, I am applying for a grant, and I needed this trailer to be done. So, to make a long story short, the music that is being used in the trailer will not be the actual music in the short. For that reason, I have chosen to not yet post the trailer on my website, (legal reasons, I used freeplay music) buy I did want to get your (the members of DVX user) opinion. I have posted three links. Since this is going to be projected on an HD projector, I edited the whole thing at 720P, plus there were some parts that were actually shot using a higher resolution Digital SLR. So There is a 720P trailer, and then the normal size quicktime and WMV. Let me know if any of you are having trouble viewing the footage.
Constructive criticism is welcom, as I will be applying for a pretty big grant that should cover the cost of this film, as well as projection costs. Sorry I can't show more of the film, but as this is part of the final project for my BFA in Photography I have to keep it under wraps for a while. I have been shooting since mid November, normally just weekends, as all the actors are students and work full time as well.

Enjoy, and sorry for all the hype ;)

By the way, the files will only be available for a limited time, or until I get the actual music for the trailer.

Re: Awake Trailer

That Was Sweet!! Loved the way it looked and how did you make the titles? Very sweet. Two Thumbs Way Way UP! :P :D

Re: Awake Trailer

You watched already? :o Man I'm still uploading it. That was fast. If you watched anyone except for the quicktime version I don't think you saw the whole thing. I just tried it and only got halfway though. Give it about another 30 min.
Thanks for the comment though, and the titles were done in flash.

Re: Awake Trailer

man every shot was perfect. beautiful. really loved the scene in the hills. great colors. can't wait to see the final product.

Re: Awake Trailer

nice work. looks fantastic, and the story is pretty intriguing . be sure to give me a heads up when its done.

Re: Awake Trailer

Hey Scharky, the images look very nice, I liked the colors tone on the hills. When are we going to see the final project.

Re: Awake Trailer

Thanks for all the great replies!

Lets see

you shot this 720P? how'd ya do that? anamorphic?

No, this is regular DVX footage, just uprezzed to 720p. The parts where he is standing in the field is the Hi-Rez stuff, shot on a Digital SLR. I wanted to presereve that footage as much as possible, so I made the DVX footage match it. I think the DVX footage compensated quite well in the uprezz, even though the uncompressed 720P clips are eating up my hard drive. :D

Oh, my. In the IMDB already? Cool.

What! Oh crap, how did someone allready come out with a film the same name as mine in the last 19 days. He Stole my MOVIE! ;D Does that meen I need to change my film title? :(

When are we going to see the final project.

I should have the final project finished by the spring.

Thanks again for the comments.

Here's a few questions for you.

-What do you think of the titles?
-As far as the overall "look" what exactly is it that you like? (dislike)?
-Dialog, good/bad? (I know in this trailer there isn't much, but how does it sound?
-Any other comments are welcome.

Nah. If you look, you'll see another "Awake" from 1997, too.

Re: Awake Trailer

Nice looking trailer. The only thing that seemed off were the first two shots. The first thing I noticed was the continuity of the cut. It's always nice to cut on the action but cutting from when she is about to pick up the paper to a shot where she is still and reading the paper is a little awkward.

If you start a bit later in the first shot and hold it till she picks up the paper, then cut into the second shot later it might work better. You would then start her dialogue in the first shot and cut to the second about the time she says "up" or "already?". Hope that makes sense.

The rest of it looks great. Nice titles. Shots are clear and composed well. The effects work. Looks really good.

Re: Awake Trailer

How'd ya do it w/ a SLR? take 24 pics of a motion?
It's a very slow and painstaking process. lets just say it's like shooting claymation, but with real actors. There are still a few more scenes that I have yet to film that will be stop motion, and while I love the way they look, the process is slow and painful, not so much for me, but the poor actors who have to hold a pose for 10 minutes.

You are absolutely right. that was actually a cut that I really didn't want to make for the trailer, the actual film is cut differently. But I will definatly take that into consideration when re editing the trailer. I definatly like your idea of starting the line before the cut to her face. I think that will help things to flow much better. Thanks.

what did you use for colour correction? your NLE?

The whole thing was color corrected in Vegas. Let me just say that there are a lot of layers and keying going on. I love color correcting almost as much as shooting the film itself. Call me odd, but it's just one of my favorite parts of the process. The thing I don't like is the rendering. Some of those 1 min long scenes take over 2 hours to render (uncompressed AVI). I'm still tweaking it to try and cut out filters and such that are not noticeable but will make things render faster.

Re: Awake Trailer

Here is a little example of the color corrections. Each scene is different, but many of the same tecniques were applied to them as to keep the continuity from scene to scene.

Re: Awake Trailer

sweet, thanks. I was thinking you meant in stop motion style, but wanted to make sure. That must have taken forever!! Did you do 24 pics a sec?

Re: Awake Trailer

Damn scharky! That looks funkin awesome! I can't wait to see the completed movie. I'm super digging the stop motion effect in the field. :D
