AWAKE Dvd cover, input please

So as some of you know, I have been working (in my downtime) on a short film. This is part of a larger project that will be having a gallery showing the first weekend in December. Well, I will be putting this entire project on a DVD, and I designed a cover, and would love to get your input on it. I have run it through spell check as well, but if there are spelling and gramatical errors, or something just doesn't make sense, please let me know. Thanks.

The title is hard to read on the cover. ok on the spine but the cover title is washed out into the forehead. Otherwise - GREAT!
One other thing, if you are planning on commercial sales, you need to leave room on the back for the UPC label. Check out any commercial DVD you have. I guess there's room at the upper left hand side.......

I agree with the title being hard to read but the rest looks really good.

I think the text at the bottom of the cover looks kinda weak. It a little to straight laced. IMHO.

Is there a trailer for this floating around?

Looks really cool but like the other two guys said, the title needs some work so you can see it better. Maybe change the font to something other than the digital characters. Also from what I've seen of your short it really doesn't fit. Maybe a little dream like.

I agree

The title needs to JUMP OUT and BITE US

Also; on back Filmmaker should be one word (not two)

The Center Justifed font paragraph isnt jiving for me for some reason.

The rest looks great

your descriptions seem to wordy. why not just, "Behind The Scenes"

1:85:1 ..probably don't need that. Am I going to watch because you've noted tthat?
I'm not into the Windows 10 , QuickTime info..but maybe others are

do you need to capitalize "Film maker"? and isn't it one word? "film" too many times.

"John" finds himself...this sentence is kind of too long.
..also, I remember teacher saying never start a sentence with "But"...most of the time I don't care, but on official stuff, better to look for a different way of writing it.
sorry so short and snappy.

Hey no problem. That's why I asked. Ok, I have some work to do, but I appreciate the words of wisdom, keep it up. The digital characters, by the way, are a reference to something in the film, but I appreciate the thought. never thought about selling it retail, but I guess I should always leave room for that remote possibility.
So I'll do some work on the title, i didn't want it to stand out too much, but I see where you are coming from.
John, I don't dig the centered text either, I am trying to figure out something that looks better. It's just such an odd space.
Pooh, thanks for the text corrections, that is my weekest point, I am not a writter and appreciate the help.

There is a trailer for the film, although it is rather old, i havn't updated it in a while, and I feel it a rather week depiction of the film, more of a teaser. you can find it here

You can also see more stills from the movie here

Thanks for all the input, and I would love more. Wasn't really expecting all this at 1AM :)

I like it, but I don't have much else to say other than what everyone else has said. Although, one thing I do feel is that it looks a little cluttered... I guess I just like really simplistic things, less is more I always say!

Looks good, but I don't like:

• Title is a little hidden, although I like how it blends into the face
• The text "a short film.." bottom right looks tacky to me
• Remove the black box from around the DVD logo
• I'm with John H on the Centre justified text thing
• The different edges to the photos on the back - one is rough/smokey edge, the other 2 are sharp rectangles. I prefer the smokey look.
• The blend between the 2 eyes on the front cover. I would prefer if the eye on the left, the closed one, was actually the man's right eye. Maybe make it a split screen type thing - not a blend of two photos.... the blend just looks a little odd. Or have the right hand side of his face drop out into black so it blends into the rear cover photo.
• There is a wide left hand margin on the back cover - try to fill the space. Maybe move the text left.

Just how it looks to me though, so feel free to ignore...

Hi there,

I like the cover. the only thing that bothers me is the text on the bottom right of the front.

Here is a cover for a DVD I released 1 month ago (Christian short (12 minutes), in the Afrikaans Language). I'm not a pro but hopefully this cover doesn't look to bad? The short movie is called "Ticket" if you translate "Kaartjie". the 001 is for the first one in a series. We sold just under 100 (abougt 97) on opening day.

Thanks,

Besides the title being too hidden and the spelling of filmmaker, I wouldn't be able to tell the budget difference between this cover and about 80% of the covers at Blockbuster, looks like a REAL movie cover that was shot by a REAL company.......

Looks great..........

I loved the trailer and that staccato 'The Ring' effect was awesome........

Agree with John on the center justified font paragraph. It's not working for me.

I think "A short film" should be in the middle of the front and a little higher. When put in an Amaray case it might look a little accidental sitting there in the right corner.

Also think the title needs to be slightly more prominent. Perhaps making it pop more will help. Also try putting it just under his eye, which might make more sense thematically because when you're awake your eyes are open.

Agree with the text comments about simplifying and making things as concise as possible. Other than that it looks great.

For a great DVD cover resource for inspiration and design tips check out http://www.cdcovers.cc/covers.php

It really helped me with design layout.

Looking great- definately pro, like anything you'd pick up at blockbuster.

my .02-

- Left justify the text "Visual ..."
- If you're set on keeping the Title on the cover like that, then repeat the title VERY CLEARLY on the back and spine. I like how the title on the cover, and have seen others do similar work, but it would help if the spine and back had the title more clearly readable.
- Special features & Specifications - (I think that it is this monitor, I'm away from my computer, so disregard this if it is not true.) Needs to stand out more, I had trouble reading it. (Again, I think this monitor has troubble displaying reds..)
-Lose the 1.85:1 - it is kind of redundant since it is not hugely different from the 16:9.

On a nother note- how did you go about the HiDef 720p versions? (Photozoom, After Effects ...)

Maybe you should put the title on his eye instead of his forehead?

I was thinking the same exact thing. Right on the eye.

Otherwise, I agree with the others who said it looks very professional.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks again everyone that replied. You guys really are the best, and have given me really good ideas as to what I do to this to make it better. I should hopefully have a private screener version of the film on the web within the next week. I don't want to do a public veiwing becasue of some of the festivals that I want to submit this to, but I will give further instructions as to when you guys can view the film.
I'll also make some changes to the DVD cover and post the new version, so that you guys can see all of your great ideas take form.
Thanks again you guys.

Ok, changes have been made. Lets see if this works any better. Again, if there is something that sucks, feel free to tell me. thanks. And if I left anything out just let me know. I do appreciate the feedback, as this already looks much better than the previous version. You guys rock.
