Seriously, I've got to sit here and import each card individually?

No!

I've got a drive with 40 cards on it - I've got to sit here and babysit this thing one card at a time?

is there any way to batch capture multiple P2 files at the same time in FCP????

Yes. If you are on FCP 5.1.2, bring up the P2 import window, click the add folder button. When the finder window pops up, navigate to the drive, just click the first card folder, hold down shift and click the last folder, click open. All 40 folders will now be in your import window. (this may take a little while, be patient) Highlight them all and click "add selection to cue".

Yeah, but the P2 import window is very very nice

My only complaint is you can't tell FCP where to stick the converted files. I know you can change the scratch disk, but I don't want to have to be changing it every time I want to bounce to a different project.

Careful...the import function on FCP 5.1.2 isn't stable. Not working for most of us.
