Avoiding noise with correct exposure.

This is a task I’m currently trying to get my head around and would appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Shooting on the 550d regardless of the lens I use, I get noisy shadows.

Does the cameras dynamic range contribute to the noise? It seems even if everything is exposed within seven stops, using the zone system, although zones 1-3/4 contain an image they are unpleasantly noisy. Therefore it seems I’m unable to produce a noiseless image with greater than 4-5 stops of latitude. (I know this can be improved on in post but I’d prefer not to rely on it.)

Am I being fussy? Or is there a way to fit a good, noiseless, seven stops without having to overexpose when shooting and lower brightness in post.

Sorry if I’m repeating something already addressed or just completely off track.

idk man... even tv shows such as house have noise present, hence any movie you watch does... dont worry about it

Yeah, i know. If everything else is well in place i guess a little noise won't hurt. And you can't expect too much from something so relatively cheap as the 550d.

Cheap?

professional projects are being done with this $800-$900 camera. There is nothing cheap about it, learn your craft, master your craft!

So you're saying the 550d is NOT relatively cheap compared to what is used for most higher quality narrative works? I know it's a great camera but it does have limitations. I am trying to find out whether the issue i addressed is one of those limitations. Can you help with that?

I think for most of us, the term "inexpensive" is more palatable... :)

Yes you are right, I must rephrase to 'relatively inexpensive'. Its not right to say the camera that I saved up for for months and sold half my old camera gear is...cheap. That's just snooty.

Since the DSLR's don't really have noise reduction might I suggest:

Totally worth investing the money into this...I regularly shoot into 1600+ iso without fear now...its even great on NON grainy footage.

Don't take my word for it tho...try the free demo plugin.

Thanks for the link, I have heard of this program before so i'll check it out out. It seems i may have to accept the fact that i must rely on post to bring down the noise in my videos. Unless I can figure out a more efficient way of lighting.
