Avid slow?

so if i am to understand this right the graphics card handles the rendering?

The graphics card assists the rendering. It doesn't do it all. Essentially, a Nitris system is able to share the load between the CPU, the Nitris box, and the GPU on the video card.

so could the graphics card be possibly causing the slow render? i cant help but wonder if maybe i am just expecting it to be faster than it should but now imi starting a hd project and its worrying me. i brought in the files and they are dvcprohd should i transcode them to dnxhd for editing?

Honestly, I've never heard of a system as slow as your seems to be. One of Avid's main claims to fame is it's speed. I spoke to several guys cutting feature films on hardware that didn't rival my laptop. And your system spanks my laptop.

You either have a real issue with your Avid install, or something is wrong with your hardware. I am not qualified to help you solve either of those things over the internet. So either call the company who built your system, or call Avid support, and get it solved.

yea thanks for all your help tho, much appreciated, it looks like i may have a chance tomorrow morning to call them at 6 am.

Which timecode effect are you using, and why are you rendering it? Media Composer 4.x has a realtime timecode plugin. However, if you export it will have to render it, and it's a render hog (and doesn't appear to be multiprocessor aware). Not all Avid effects use the GPU, and not all use more than one processor. This may be the case here.

MojoDX doesn't process effects, but it does handle thin raster formats (it promotes them to full raster, freeing up CPU cycles, so in a way it does help with your playback - just not as much as the NitrisDX, and not so much with effects).

So, to get to the heart of whether this is a bad Avid install or not, why are you rendering the timecode plugin (are you exporting?), which timecode plugin are you using (I think there are two - one is realtime, the other is not), and what drives do you have your media installed on? There may be a bottleneck with your drives (but I doubt it).

The Mojo does do some processing. It allows for more effects to be real time and not need a render. What version of 4.0 are you working on? 4.0.? There was an issue with one of the installs where it needed to be installed twice.

It's been stated numerous times on Avids forums that the Mojo DX doesn't do any external processing. It's strictly an I/O box just like the regular Mojo and the Mojo SDI were. The only unit that does Effect and Processing Acceleration is the Nitris DX (and Adrenaline while it lasts, could be EOL already). The DS Breakout box doesn't even do acceleration.

The only RT processing it (Mojo DX) adds is taking the processing of the anamorphic formats off of the computer and onto itself. ALL capture cards that I know of do that.
