Avid slow?

OK this is a little odd we ave using an avid media composer major DX system from core micro it has Dual quad core processors and 8 gig of ram it is running 64 bit vista and avid 4.0. I noticed that when rendering effects it takes along time; a really long time.an hour long clip with only the time code effect takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. I also noticed that it is only using one of the 8 cores dunning this process? am I losing my mind or is this typical, my brother's man book did the same process in 35 min and his is only a dual core ma c that cost thousands less? am I missing something?

my brother was using FCP by the way

Something is VERY wrong. Your system is similar to mine, and the timecode effect for me is real-time. As are most other effects.

Two questions.

1. What format of video are you working in? Did you transcode to DNxHD, or is this some other native type?

2. What graphics card do you have installed?

OHMIGOODNESS...

You're editing SD? Your system should be FLYING! My similar system is real time and I am editing 1080p. In SD nothing needs to render.

Call Avid or jump on their excellent forums. Something is way wrong.

are you using multi core processors? It so is it possible for you to see if you Are using more than one core when rendering? I am pretty sure you do, that would only make sense.

I am on an 8 core. I currently have a render going in another NLE at the moment. When it finishes, I'll do a quick render from Avid and let you know.

ok thank you . i had originally thought that it was slow because we were using 32 bit so we upgraded and i started with a fresh install and still slow after upgrading to 4.0 and 64 bit. i would hate to see a 15,000 dollar editing station get circles run around it by a mac book. we got avid because it is so robust but i am always waiting for effects to render and its affecting my learning curve.

Did you ever find out what graphics card was in there? I honestly can't think of any reason why it would be that slow.

i tried avid forums but my search turned up nothing . and ofcourse support is only 24x7 if you pay for it and to pay for it i have to call durring business hours witch is when i am at my other job that pays for all of this to happen. lame

so did i make a bad choice getting the mojo since the only i/o we do is from my hvx via p2 and capture via firewire to dvd ?

Are you monitoring your HD output? If so, the Mojo is the only way to really do that. If not, then you probably could have done without the Mojo.

yes, you should be. Post on the forums. The people there are EXCELLENT. I usually get a response within 15 minutes, and often from an Avid employee or trainer.

Ok, doing a render on an SD source (Avid DV50) to another file (same as source). I am seeing activity on more than one processor, but only one is being used heavily.

ok well i posted, do you need to predorm a video mixdown or when would you ?

I'm no Avid expert, but you'd do a mixdown if you were say working on a part of a large project, and you had finished that part and wanted to bring all that into the larger project.
