Avid Goes Subscription Mode - Are you interested?

Which means FCP is going to be the only viable NLE where you actually OWN the software? I tried the Adobe subscription model, but I would just prefer to own the damn thing.

Yeah I completely agree with you there Simon, it's getting ridiculous with everything turning into subscription models. I'm drowning in them!!

Great showreel by the way! Get in touch if you ever have any stock video you'd like to share :)

Avid still offers a perpetual license version. They didn't go subscription only like Adobe.

LightWorks has free, monthly, annual, and major version purchase license options where you pay an upgrade fee for the next major version. But their major versions right now are coming every year, so not sure "owning" makes a lot of sense until it matures a bit more. They passed the one million download mark in April.

Personally I'm going for it - but I'll be continuing with my current license.

I've gotten tired of waiting for FCP X to not suck. My friend came over with an F55-shot project and I spent all of 4 hours trying to get FCPX to load the #@$%ing proxies. Never actually got everything to work. We were slowed by the fact that it kept trying to eat up 100GB plus of his laptop's SSD space even though we asked it to keep everything on the drive.

Premiere is good but a little glitchy for my liking and I'm not a fan of the fact that there is no way to own the software. I guess I'm a bit like ol' George R.R. Martin who wants to still run Wordstar to edit Game of Thrones on his old DOS machine... but I really, really like the idea of owning my own editing system and being able to load my old projects from years past without paying someone a monthly fee. I'm also not a fan of the fact that they promise more in every version than they deliver. Rather marketing-heavy.

Anyway, yeah, I'm going to keep using Avid since it still has the craft best editing tools for me (trim tool, etc)... and the thing just works. Add in Resolve and Pro Tools and you have a nice finishing setup.

I'm waiting to see what Davinci Resolve 11 brings to the editing table. Anybody know when that's getting released?

You must be doing something wrong then. FCPX was missing features at the beginning, but has had them in place for a long time now and its very stable. It eats everything I throw at it, including 4K, and that's on a laptop.

There are some decent training videos out there that will get you up to speed; if you're coming from FCP7 then it's worth relearning as the workflows are quite different.

Thanks, let me know if there's anything specific you want?

Quite possible. That said...
- If I need to "relearn my workflow" to just import a frikkin' clip, that's an issue.
- If I ask FCPX not to store stuff on my Macintosh HD, not to make proxies, etc but to leave footage in place... I don't expect it to use up 100GB of drive space. That's an issue.

I spent quite a lot of time reading the manual and doing tutorials when FCPX came out so I did do things the right way by the book. Maybe "the right way" has changed. Anyway, my day rate is too high to waste hours fighting with software that doesn't listen to me.

With both Avid and Premiere it was insanely drag-and-drop simple. Drag the folder in and start working. They also work great on my laptop. Maybe they do 4K. Maybe they don't. I don't care. My laptop screen isn't 4K, I don't have a 4K monitor and I don't need 4K for an offline. If I do an online, I'll be in DaVinci Resolve, which handles 4K no problem.

So I just saw Avid has taken a leaf out of Adobe's book with their new pricing plans: http://www.redsharknews.com/post/item/1689-avid-unveils-new-licensing-options

What do you guys think about Avid being made more accessible?

Is that what you think a subscription model does -- make it more accessible? I see it more along the lines as a way for Avid to get their hands into my wallet for a never ending monthly money grab. In which I choose not to participate, for the same reason I choose not to lease a car.

My hopes right now lie with BMD and DiVinci Resolve. May it evolved decent editing capabilities by the time I need to upgrade from Adobe CS6. Please!

Interested in Media Composer but not a subscription. I tried the trial. It's good. It might be worth a couple of months to see how it goes with Symphony. I do not edit everyday. I'm doing more shooting for projects with other editors and editing my own projects so no, no subscription for me.

When you click on import and select files you want to import, next dialog box asks if you want proxies and want to leave footage in place.

Grass Valley Edius , you can buy and do the normal upgrade way , also Lightworks you can buy outright.

You can still buy it for one price, but a lot of people, especially younger graduates and alike who have been taught on professional software and now want to work on it freelance or otherwise will not have a big chunk of cash to drop on software. This is why the monthly subscription makes the software more accessible. Last month if you needed Avid to edit tomorrow, you'd have had to pay loads. Now, if you want Avid tomorrow, you pay a small amount. Therefore, Avid is now more accessible.

Not true at all. Avid had for years "student pricing" policy, you could buy (with a student ID) a whole software package for $300, Sorenson included.

You can't legally do commercial work with the student version. BTW, Sony Vegas Pro 13 is out and has perpetual license, you can still keep older versions on you PC and use them.

Yeah, i'm talking about legally accessible. If we were talking about illegally accessible then anyone with a good internet connection can be up and running almost any software they want within 30 minutes.
