i shot a film over the summer on 35mm and got it data cine scanned. the place that did it gave it back to me as full res quicktime files which wouldn't play on my mac. they told me to download avid dnxhd codec and then i'd be able to edit in FCP. the codec enables the clips to play in quicktime, but when i import em into FCP they are just blank and I can't see picture. I have the brand new version of FCP Studio 2 and a new iMac. Any ideas how to convert the files, or a codec I can download to edit this thing, or am i screwed? any help would be appreciated. thanks!

If they play well in QT and don't in FCP, the best solution is perhaps to open every clip in QT and export them as Quicktime movie in ProRes 422.

I'm using the newest FCP, and yeah i would think that if they play in QT they'd play in FCP but that's not the case. i tried exporting in ProRes422 but am still getting a blank image... any more ideas?

i dont get what you mean by trashing the perfs...
thanks again!

Sometimes the preference files in FCP get corrupted and the program will do some wonky things for lack of a better term. Trashing prefs resets the basic setting for FCP.

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.

Then go to your hard drive/applications/utilities/disk utility and launch that and then select the mac hard drive on the left column, and then click the button to repair disk permissions.

so i tried to delete the preference files but there was no "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file
or
"Final Cut Pro User Data" folder

unless I'm just an idiot. Below is the screenshot of where I was looking... maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

Thanks to everyone who's helping me!

Ok, had a few experiences with DNxHD. first, it does work with FCP 5.1.4, so i guess it should work with FCP6.0. Second it takes a bit of messing around, but this is what needed to happen for me.

go to this website http://www.avid.com/onlineSupport/browse.asp?productID=0&topicID=404&browse=

when i did it i had to use an installer from a previouse version, and then unpack some more QT codec files into the right place. Since then they have released a new version that has an installer so i would think that it would work.

the other thing to know about the DNxHD codec is that it really should only be used in my opinion for an offline edit (which sounds like what your doing). It does tend to fall apart with keying and colour grading. Just my 2c.

Try going to the library folder in your donee100 users folder instead of the folder on the root directory.
