.avi file creation

i know this is a horrible question but what do you guys use to turn avchd into .avi and such.....am i just not seeing the software in my hmc150 box?
 
Use of a video editor Such as Adobe Premier Pro CS4, Sony Vegas 9 (or 8.0c), Final Cut Pro, etc. Though, there is plenty of other software that is capable of exporting to avi - for free.

These can export to .avi, as well as a variety of other formats (I don't know about FCP, since it's mac, but I'm pretty sure that Sony and Adobe both can encode avi).
 
Panasonic has a free transcoder called MainConcept DVCPRO Transcoder that will convert your files in P2-format MXF files. They won't play in Windows Media Player, but most NLEs these days will accept it. Depending on your computer they will transcode around .5X to 2X realtime (my dual-core laptop is a little slower than real-time, my quad-core desktop is a bit faster than realtime).

This program can also creat AVI's
