Avchd

Hi guys,
For all you guys with the HMC150's, I am just curious: What is AVCHD? Is it a higher resolution than 1920X1080 or is it just a different codec? I don't know much about HD because I have a DVX but I am just curious...

[matt s.]

does 1920X1080 & 1280X720

read this. even mentions the 150.

AVCHD is a new recording format. It's a way to record high def video, like HDV or DVCPRO-HD or XDCAM-EX or HDCAM. It's got more in common with XDCAM-EX than just about any other format, it's not a top-of-the-line ultra-high-quality format. It's a jointly-developed format by Sony and Panasonic which is intended to replace HDV and be "the new DV".

But what exactly IS the difference between HDV, DVCPRO HD, HDCAM etc... ?

[David Saraceno]

Bit rates, color space among others.

DVCProHD 4:2:2 and up to 100 mbps.

HDV is 4:2:0 and about 25 mbps.

AVCHD goes to 24 mbps and is 4:2:0.

wikipedia is a good place to start:

When the MainConcept AVCHD -> DVCProHD transcoder runs, it converts the camera's 1280x720 images into 960x720 images with 1.33:1 pixel aspect ratios. Does this mean DVCProHD inherently has a one-quarter loss in vertical resolution when compared to AVCHD? If so that seems like a pretty big deal.
