AVCHD + Slow Machine = Help Needed

I have the HMC 150.
I have a macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo) 2.66 GHz
I Edit with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Obviously the footage is a strain on my system. Its very slow & choppy when scrubbing & Editing.
I can't change anything right now. What I have is what I have for at least a couple months (and I have some projects that are shot and need to be edited).

I have been editing the AVCHD footage directly. I have heard about converting it to DVC Pro HD and edit that footage. Any thoughts on that method? Will it help? Are there any free converters?

Any other advice (other than upgrade to a Quad Core +)?

slow machine = transcode!
log and transfer to prores and you'll be fine.
if you run out of hdd space, you may need to buy an external firewire hdd to increase storage space.

averan he is using premiere not fcp, so log and transfer wont do the trick.

Jimmy, Panasonic released their transcoder for PC only and I don't know of any free ones. However you can use Adobe Media Encoder, they downside of course is you can't do an auto batch and it can become annoying if you have a lot of clips.

You should take a look at NEO SCENE from Cineform, which is a software package that installs the Cineform CODEC on your Mac, along with a transcoding utility.

The main benefits of NEO SCENE are:

- Cineform is a 10 bit wavelet based editing/archiving CODEC
- Enables full screen playback on older computers
- Creates cross-platform video files that can be opened and edited on both Mac and PC computers ( works with FCP, Premiere, Vegas NLEs )
- Handles AVCHD footage with ease, and automatically takes care of 24P telecine removal

You can download a free trial at: Cineform Neoscene
