AVCHD Playback via USB Stick

thanks everyone.

PS3 is too expensive for my tastes since I'm not a gamer. I never got use to the thumb/mini joystick controller. lack of hand coordination on my part. I miss
the pc joystick and flight games in the old days(wing commander,etc...)
those were fun and you did not have to remember a million different combinations of movements and keystrokes.

jleo maybe on to something. I read over the jvc manual and it says it does
support h264/etc... mp4, mkv. I'll try to rename them and see what happens.

Matroska is a container different from MPEG transport stream. It would be pretty lame for JVC to allow bare Matroska files with MPEG-TS content, but not to play those MPEG-TS that have a proper file extension.

Hi Cranky,

I'll give it a try and rename it. yes, would be pretty strange if it works when you rename to *.mkv.

this is from the jvc manual:

MPEG4 file requirement
MPEG4 file compatibility with this player is limited
as follows:
• Available resolution size: 1920 x1080 (W x H)
pixels
• The file names of MPEG4 and subtitle are limited
to 50 characters.
• MPEG4 file extensions: “.avi”, “.mpg”, “.mpeg”,
“.mp4”, “.mkv”
• This unit does not support the DivX file.
• Playable MPEG4 subtitle: SubRip (.srt / .txt),
SAMI (.smi), SubStation Alpha (.ssa/.txt),
MicroDVD (.sub/.txt), SubViewer 2.0 (.sub/.txt),
TMPlayer (.txt), DVD Subtitle System (.txt)
• Playable Codec format: “XVID”, “H.264/MPEG-4
AVC”
• Playable Audio format: “Dolby Digital”, “DTS”,
“MP3”, “WMA”, “AAC”
• Sampling frequency: within 8 - 48 kHz (MP3),
within 32 - 48 kHz (WMA)
• Bit rate: within 8 - 320 kbps (MP3),
within 32 - 164 kbps (WMA)
• CD-R/RW, DVD±R/RW, BD-R/RE Format:
ISO 9660+JOLIET, UDF and UDF Bridge format
• Maximum Files/Folder:
Less than 650 (total number of files and folders)
• Not all the WMA Audio format is compatible with
this unit.
• This player support H.264/MPEG-4 AVC profile
Main, High at Level 4.1.
For a file with higher level, the player will ask
whether you want to play or not.
• Displaying subtitle file is not available for video
files with “.mpg” and “.mpeg” extensions.
• HD movie files contained on the CD or USB
1.0/1.1 may not played properly. BD, DVD or
USB 2.0 are recommended to play back HD
movie files.

This list does not say that the player supports AVCHD. If needed, you can rewrap AVCHD from MPEG-TS into MKV without losing quality.

If renaming works, this is even better. It is still lame, but at least you don't need to rewrap.

Hi Cranky,

you were right. it does not playback even after renaming to *.mkv
it recognizes the file but cannot play it.

how do you rewrap AVCHD from MPEG-TS into MKV?

thanks

The thing you are looking for is "muxing" or "wrapping", also google for "matroska container". For starters, check "editors" section on this page http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html (or select another OS if you are not on Windows). In particular, this should work: http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/ EDIT: Um, no. It does not support MPEG-TS. Maybe it will load it if you have a separate driver installed? I haven't tried. Usually, I perform a reverse task, converting MKV files from elsewhere into MPEG-TS to watch on my Blu-ray player.

I asked Panasonic support about the BD60K BDP. They said it will not play *.mts files so I'm not too sure at this point. GH1 avchd files only works on their tv's?

But even on a Mac, VLC cannot play GH1 Full HD clips , but plays GH1 720p clips. Maybe the Panasonic version of AVCHD at FullHD plays only on VIERA players.
I play 1080p on my MacPro with the video player included in Toast without problems. VLC is not a good option for AVCHD playback.

It will not play MTS files dumped to a disc, but will play properly authored AVCHD disc. American version will not play 25p/50i content.

sorry if this is getting old and I seem to be asking the same questions. I asked Panasonic if it would play *.mts files through the SDHC port of their BDP.

I'm trying to avoid burning dvd's since I just want to quickly view the gh1 files with having to use the camera itself to the tv.

Same answer applies: author a proper AVCHD card. AFAIK, you cannot have a menu on a card. Or, pull a card from your camera and stick into the player. I can confirm that original cards from the SD1 and SD100 work in BD60/80, as well as AVCHD cards authored in MultiAVCHD. I don't know about the GH1 differences from other Pana AVCHD cameras in terms of encoding and directory stucture.

Mine is the Panny DMP-BD30K which I got on sale over a year ago at Amazon for only $225...I really like it. But yeah that new BD60K is a LOT cheaper and looks like it is pretty much the same thing! http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMP-...4482754&sr=1-1

I don't use the SDHC slot much, but like I say it's pretty cool for watching home videos immediately after shooting...in addition to the 1080/24p off the GH1's card, even the 720/60p video off my Panny DMC-ZS3 point-n-shoot's SDHC card plays back beautifully on it...looks amazing. Pretty cool!

guess I will have to buy the bd60k and give it a try.

Hi Cranky,

this is the feedback I got from jvc support. they are really good with customer service.

{The video clip you provided has a frame rate of 60fps where the Blu-Ray player only recognizes AVCHD files with a frame rate of 30fps.}

duh, now I remember, the 720 setting records in 60fps out of
the camera. is there a quick way of converting it to 30fps?

thanks!

Actually, 720p60 is a legit Blu-ray format.

You said you don't want to burn discs. So, this is for your own consumption, not for handing out. I suggest you trying something like WDTV or Asus O!Play (about $100 each) before shelling out $300 for PS3. If you don't play games and don't need an optical drive, the former devices may work for you. I have the O!Play and so far it played everything I threw at it except for DV-AVI. It plays HDV (rename M2T to M2TS), AVCHD, MKV, DivX, other stuff. It plays both 50hz-based and 60Hz-based titles on my 60-Hz TV. It deinterlaces fine if video is properly flagged, it is not as good with bad flags. I don't know whether GH1's 24p is flagged correctly.

Do ANY of these panasonic blu-ray players that take SD cards actually remove the pulldown on the fly and play 1080 24p correctly?

How was anyone ever suppose to see what their 1080p files actually looked like? Did panasonic expect consumers to buy things like neoscene? It makes no sense...

yes, not an option at this time. I went ahead and ordered the DM60 bdp to give it a try. if it cannot play straight out of the card from the GH1, it's no different than the other bdp I have.

I agree, you have to burn another $120 for neoscene just to be able to view the video's. I gave neoscene a try yesterday. I recorded about 20secs worth of video. It took about 10mins. to do it's thing. I have a pentium 2.4Ghz Quad. So not only do you need a really fast pc but a lot of time just for converting.
It de-interlaced to 30fps but saves it in an *.avi file. I understand that great for editing, yet defeats the purpose of viewing it as an avchd file which the bdp can do, as long as it's 30fps.

Is there any software than can convert the 60fps to 30fps and retain the *.mts file? If panasonic gave the option of recording at 30fps, this would not be a big deal and would also cut on time.

thx
