AVCHD Playback via USB Stick

Hi,

I have the JVC xv-bp1 blu ray player. The specs says it supports AVCHD.

I've tried transcoding the GH1 *.mts files to Hard Drive and SD Card formats.
I've also tried the multiavchd application. Once I have transferred the files
to the USB stick and insert it into the jvc player. It will see the folders
but no files are displayed for playback.

If you have this JVC player, have you tried avchd playback via the USB port?

Thanks for your help!

What exactly do you mean by "transcoding the GH1 *.mts files to Hard Drive and SD card formats"? What format is that exactly? That may be the problem. I don't think a hard drive or an SD card has a format.

Does the player have online documentation? Maybe I or somebody else could look at it and see what it says exactly.

Okay well I looked at the online documentation and I'm not sure it is telling me anything. I think the problem is probably in your first step with transcoding. Try putting your entire PRIVATE folder on the drive and navigating from there.

the JVC may not play mts files. Try changing the suffix to .mpg or mp4. See if that works.

From what I've read Panasonic VIERA TVs and bluray can play GH1 footage from SD cards.

Hi,

Thanks for everyone's replies. not sure if use the trancoding word correctly.
Whatever nero does to change the *.mts file to something playable via dvd or some type of flash device.

It could very well be the USB on the JVC only supports *.mp4 type.
I'll try renaming and see what happens.

not sure what is meant by 'The advantage with their blueray players is that there is HDMI output. '

basically I just want to view the video files as quickly as possible without
having to use the GH1 connected to the tv itself. I don't want to convert
to *.mp4 since that takes up time. so I was hoping to be able to do it with
the JVC blu ray player since it supports avchd but maybe only through dvd
and not USB.

thx

The HDMI out could give you the option to convert to a different format in real time if you have some other devices attached to it (Nanoflash for XDCAM, a SD DVD recorder if you want instant dailies/rushes).

I'm watching 1920x1080/24p (of course...in the 60i wrapper) footage from my GH1 on my TV right now, using a Panasonic BD player...straight off the SDHC card out of the camera...it looks freaking amazing. Connected to the 1080p TV via HDMI. Pretty cool when you're shooting home video and people want to see it before they leave...versus my typical default of wanting to import/transcode/edit/burn to BDR. It's very liberating.

That is correct. The advantage with their blueray players is that there is HDMI output.
The Panasonic bluray players will play the GH1 clips out over HDMI or component. The only problem is that they don't deinterlace or do reverse telecine on the FHD AVCHD clips so the clips can look pretty bad if they have motion.

cool. that's what I'm trying to do. I have a samsung tv though and not panasonic.
I'll check with JVC to see what they support on their USB port.

thx

AVCHD uses MTS and M2TS file extensions for MPEG transport stream files. MPG and MP4 are extensions for MPEG program stream and Quicktime MPEG-4 container, respectively. Which means, that your advice has no sense and no relation to the problem Bengali is experiencing.

It doesn't hurt to try it. This worked with VLC when I couldn't play GH1 mts files. But DVD players are another matter. Some of our dvd players we have play .mpg, some don't. The one with a usb slot only supports certain bitrates. Probably only Panasonic VIERA products can playback GH1 files directly.

If it doesn't work, then the JVC may require transcoding to DIVX for usb playback.

renaming did not work. I found out from JVC, they don't support AVCHD through the USB which is a bummer. I am hoping they have some firmware update that will fix this, probably wishful thinking.

so if I get one of those cheapy panasonic blu ray players, I see one for around $130, not sure the model #, it's their cheapest one. It should be able to playback mts files directly from the GH1? I guess that is the only solution without having to go through the pc.

thx

You can plug the SDHC card from a GH1 directly into a Panasonic blu-ray player, I've tested it and it does work. It also works on a Playstation 3.

Mine is the Panny DMP-BD30K which I got on sale over a year ago at Amazon for only $225...I really like it. But yeah that new BD60K is a LOT cheaper and looks like it is pretty much the same thing! http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMP...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264482754&sr=1-1

I don't use the SDHC slot much, but like I say it's pretty cool for watching home videos immediately after shooting...in addition to the 1080/24p off the GH1's card, even the 720/60p video off my Panny DMC-ZS3 point-n-shoot's SDHC card plays back beautifully on it...looks amazing. Pretty cool!

Word of caution: American BD60 will play 60Hz-based content only. It will not play 50i/50p/25p AVCHD.

I tried burning the GH1 *.mts files to a DVD+RW(data dvd iso) and playback on the JVC. It would not recognize the files. I have nero 9 and know that it has the option to make an AVCHD, however it goes through some time consuming encoding process which defeats the purpose of instantly playing back.

so you are saying to rename the *.mts files to *.mkv? still, that requires
the unit to support avchd through USB correct? per JVC, they don't support
avchd through the usb port at all. that is the bummer.

I'll have to get than panny 65 blu ray player one of these days.

If you want to play back AVCHD files you have to make an AVCHD disc. Simply dumping MTS files onto a DVD disc does not make it AVCHD disc just like dumping MPG files onto a DVD disc does not make it DVD-video disc.

Get the PS3 instead. It plays everything, literally.
