AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

Svart,

That's really weird. Again, so we're on the same page, here are my ptool settings all the way down. Anything not listed is not checked:

Version change
Third Party Battery
Native 24P/25P - Not Checked
MJPEG Size 1280m -> 1920m
MJPEG Encoder 1280m -> 1920m
MJPEG 1280 width - 1280
MJPEG 1280 height - 1080
MJPEG 1280 420 -> 422 color sampling
MJPEG E1 Quality - 384
MJPEG E1 Table - 24
MJPEG E2 Quality - 330
MJPEG E2 Table - 24
MJPEG E3 Quality - 300
MJPEG E3 Table - 24
MJPEG E4 Quality - 276
MJPEG E4 Table - 24
Video Buffer - 40,000,000
Video Bitrate - 50,000,000
Overall Bitrate Adjust - 52,000,000
Limiting Bitrate Adjust - 60,000,000

Camera set for manual movie. "Standard" with no adjustments. AWB on. ISO 100. 1/50th shutter speed. Manual lens so aperture is set on lens. MF focus mode. Shoot w/o lens set to ON. SanDisk Ultra 8GB class 4 card.

Just did the test again and the camera didn't jam.

One other thing, how old is your camera. Mine is just over a month old, so I wonder if there were changes throughout production.

Hope we get this all sorted.

Best,
-Tim

The only settings I run are:

Native 24p
vid buffer simplified
overall bitrate
limiting bitrate

I've also done:

native 24p
Vid buffer
vid bitrate
overall bitrate
limiting bitrate

Both with and without native 24p

Set for Creative movie mode, ISO 100 to 400(all fail) 1/50 to 1/125(all fail)

I'm starting to think maybe it's my cards. I'll probably end up getting a sandisk to compare.

ok I just compared the "A" settings with NO 24p with the "A" settings WITH 24p.

no 24P worked.

24p FAILED.

Is there any reason not to use Native 24P with C settings?

I'm gonna finally give AVCHD a try now.

Pappas

confirmed. I switched back to NO native 24p and I have NO issue with recording with the "A" AVCHD settings. I'm going to move back up to the "B" settings and try again with NO native 24P

I'm quite confused with these different types of settings... Did I understood correctly that C settings are actually the old D settings?

I'm using these settings:

Video bitrate adjustment 38000000
Overall bitrate adjustment 40000000
Limiting bitrate adjustment 42000000

Those are the recommend settings for using both 720p and 1080p right? Or is there something better now?

How does the ''Video Buffer" setting actually works... because I actually didn't use it. Is that wrong?

Also, do these settings have a name (or letter)? So I don't have to copy and paste everytime I try to explain what I used.

So the above is "C"-

However:

What about "video bitrate Adjustment simplified" What should that be set to?

the settings thing has been confused for a while. I'm not sure anyone really knows what is what anymore.

I think those settings you have are supposed to be the "jobless stable" settings.

the new Ptool doesn't have a buffer setting anymore. I'm not sure it ever really mattered though.

CONFIRMED ptool "B" settings without native 24p work. native 24p enabled gives me card speed errors.

Can someone else confirm?

Pappas,

Strictly for editing purposes. I use FCP and there's some kind of pseudo glitch when I use the 24P settings which give me 23.971 instead of 23.976, which gives me weird error messages when I try to drop the clips onto a 23.98 FCP timeline.

So I use the 60i setting and JES Deinterlacer, and that works fine. Looking at a rather large project that I may be shooting this summer and I'd like to use the GH13 with my Cooke Speed Panchros, so a stable editing path is rather important for my client.

As far as the "Video Bitrate Adjustment Simplified", I've never used that, and it works great without using that, so I ain't gonna tempt fate.

Can someone update me on this. There is a new version of ptool? I am using 3.36. Where is the new version located?

. . . now that Ptool can upgrade without version checking.

Can someone update me on this as well. What do you mean there's no "version checking" anymore. We can keep loading the firmware with the same version number over and over again?

I'm very confused and have not seen a newer ptool version.

There is a new check box that patches the firmware so that you don't have to increment the .bin number anymore. Once you apply the patch you can stay on GH1__133.bin forever if you want. This allows you to also go back to 132 if you need to.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but is it possible to run a shutter speed of 1/50 if you are shooting 25p or 50p in Pal countries?

Idealy I would like to change my camera to NTSC mode and shoot my next project at 720p in MJPEG mode with the AVCHD mode for slow mo. But being PAL I need to shoot 1/50 to reduce light fluro flicker.

Of course you can. You can do that with the current model too.

What you don't ever want to do is 1/50th in 720/60p AVCHD, because that will force the camera into a 30p mode.

Sure, so I'm gonna be shooting 720p mjpeg at 30fps and 720p AVCHD at 50, my slow mo won't be as slow as I would like. Or I'm shooting 720p AVCHD at 60 with a shutter of 1/100 and alot of light and fast glass.

Time for some location tests and maths.

Since this is all moving really fast. There are 2x optimal AVCHD settings at this time.
d) 50000000, 56000000, 60000000 - jobless (slightly different from the c setting in ptool v3.36 v3)
and
60000000, 62000000, 70000000

These work with ALL Class 10 cards. Only gotcha maybe that native 24p/25p may interfere - so turn it off if there is a problem.
MJPEG optimal is PappasArts 720 at 70mbps. Both Pappas and Barry believe that MJPEG 1080p is 720P upscaled.
So ideal combo is 4:2:2 720P 70mbps MJPEG AND 1080p 60mbps AVCHD ATM.

The only one featuring (slow) AF during video recording is the Panasonic 14-140mm f/4.0-5.8 OIS aka stock lens AFAIK, so your find shouldn't be a surprise :-)

Not true. Check panasonic GH1 site for lens information. I have a panasonic 14-45mm and they AF just fine. All Pana lenses should AF without problems. From what i remember there were some limitations to Olympus 4/3 lenses... just check their site.
