AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

Thanks, very useful!
It correlates very good with my current understanding.
We can see that separate frame size quality setting exist.
Something like Q table in JPEG.

And, of course, again we see spikes.
They are almost random and appear always at last P-frame in GOP.

Yes, this spikes indicate some bug.
Sometimes it thinks that it can allocate all remaining bitrate to last frame in GOP.
And it allocates it to some garbage.
Without source and debuger it is almost impossible to find bug,
as with hight pobability it can be even TS muxer bug, not encoder related.

A week ago when I was testing various settings for 720P, I would get very high bit rates. Ones even higher than this. I was filming extreme stuff just to see the break point on the GH1. Later I resorted to the charts for this, since I could go even farther. Which makes me wonder, if the GH1 can push through these and some that were 110Mbits+. The bandwidth in the GH1 is there, just something may not be set right with buffer or etc-Something possibly!

Here are some examples of what I got from testing a week ago.

Pappas,

When you say "high bit rates", are you taking the data rates from the chart in Quicktime (shown below)?

The reason I ask is that last night, after I had shot quite a bit of AVCHD 1080p footage with various patches applied, I was checking the data rates of the clips after I had logged and transferred them into FCP, by using the Quicktime charts like shown above. And all the data rates were in the 174 range (I transferred them to ProRes HQ). And I thought, that's impossible, I shot them at all different rates. Then I realized that when you use Log and Transfer to ingest GH1 clips into FCP, the data rate is set by FCP, depending on what codec you are transferring the data from the GH1 to. It had nothing to do with the data rate the camera captured the footage at.

When I put the raw clips (pre log and transfer in FCP) into VLC, I could see the actual data rates the clips were captured at, and that info lined up with the different patches I had applied to the GH1.

Just to throw that out there.

Just did some testing of the AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) patch with the "C" settings. So the settings were:

Video Buffer - 40,000,000 (Only caveat is that I'm not sure if I checked this or not)
Video Bitrate Adjust - 50,000,000
Overall Bitrate Adjust - 52,000,000
Limiting Bitrate Adjust - 60,000,000

Anyway, after loading this patch I took the camera out with the following settings in camera:

GH1 Standard Setting
FHD
ISO 100
1/50 sec shutter speed
Cooke Speed Panchro 18mm
AVCHD 1080p (24 fps)

And I shot "foliage of death" for about 45 seconds per clip. When I looked at the clips in VLC my data rate was spiking at 48Mbits/sec. The strange thing was, I was using my same slow SanDisk Ultra SDHC class 4 card and I couldn't get the camera to jam up or stop recording, even when I was doing wild pans through the foliage.

Here's what might be happening. I use a Hot Rod PL mount adapter with the camera (so I can use cine lenses) which means I have the camera set in movie mode, FULLY MANUAL, and the "Shoot with No Lens" (or whatever it's called) option is checked, (since the PL mount adapter has no contacts that talk to the electronics in the camera).

So I am not taxing the electronics in the camera in any way except to record the image from the sensor. I wonder if this may have something to do with getting higher bit rate information onto a slow class 4 card without anything jamming up.

Just some thoughts.

-Tim

Timmyjoe Pappas was using the mjpeg settings so these files would be playable in QT without transcoding unlike AVCHD.

I heard many are looking for artifacts in the "pan of death" stills.
Reset cam to Car3o AVCHD settings in the google docs database, added high-def audio settings (48k + 48k in both patches), filmed handheld, imported into my domestic mini Mac / iMovie combo.
No filtering, etc was used. Exported simply as Quicktime HD 1920x1080 24fps, high quality, h264 compression, 44.1k audio (camera mics).

Shutter speed was 60 f6.3 iso100, card is a plain fuji 16gb class6 sdhc card. Stock pancake 20mm lens. Filmed using SH setting, contrast -2, sharpness -1, saturation, -1 noise reduction +1.

The question is - what kind of artifacts (besides the obvious speed blur) should I be looking for?

I hear what you're saying, but what's confusing me is why the files are listed as Apple Photo-JPEG? I don't think the GH1 necessarily produces Apple Photo-JPEG codec. That led me to believe Pappas was importing them through FCP, which I found changes the bit rate.

Did a quick test and these settings seem to work well for me on both 1080 and 720 on an AData class 6 card. I have not done any testing on the files other than viewing them for codec breakup yet. I'll get to that later but I have to go now.

Can someone try them and double check they work for them too?

Hey, Tim

Just saw your post; Exactly what "Car3o" said is the answer to that question.

Thanks Pappas.

One thing I'm noticing with the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage that I've been shooting; when I Log and Transfer it into FCP and try to drop it onto a 23.98 timeline, I get the following error message:

Attention - This clip does not match this sequences settings or any of your sequence presets.

For best performance your sequence and External video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing.

Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?

When I take the original firmware footage, Log and Transfer it into FCP, de-interlace it with JES De-interlacer, and then drop it onto a 23.98 timeline, I don't get the error message.

What seems to be different about the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage is the Field Dominance. With the footage shot with the 60i wrapper and de-interlaced with JES, there is None under Field Dominance, with the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage, there is Upper (Odd) under Field Dominance.

Anyone have any ideas on this and whether it might cause some issues down the line in editing or distribution?

-Tim

Worst Case Scenario Test Footage - 20mm 1.7 Panasonic Lens + Hack

Here is a link to some MTS footage that could be considered worst case scenerio.

I am using the 20mm 1.7 lumix digital lens, I got some shaky hands going on, and I am running through high detail and very green woods.

LINK: http://media.rawdod.com/?dir=/Test Crap/20mm-firmwaretests

these were done with the settings at the bottom.

all using the 20mm autofocus 1.7aperture lens

aperture was at 4.5 for most everything

the 00038.MTS file is 720p, however , my shutter was at 60 which is probably wrong, should be at 120
so consider it wack

CHEERS!

Maybe it's because the framerate is coming out at 23.971 right now rather than 23.976 and that's confusing FCP? Try conforming one of your L&T'd clips in Cinema Tools and see what happens. I've been conforming to 23.98 in After Effects using the original MTS files and everything seems to be fine.

Just tried your setting with a Panasonic 4gb class 6 card, work ok for low detail scene but as soon as you go to high foliage detail scene, doesn't work "MOTION RECORDING WAS CANCELLED DUE TO LIMITATION OF THE WRITTING SPEED OF THE CARD" almost right away, same with an ATP 4gb class 6 card.

Than I tried an Ultra SanDisk 16gb class 4 card (15mb/s) work perfect... up to 50mbs in high detail foliage scene both in 1080 24pn and 720p60. but after about 30s in 1080 it stop with the same message. no problem with 720p I stoped the camera after 2 min.
