AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

Kholi, can't wait to see what you come up with. I just shot a ton of stuff at night, up to ISO 1600 at f/1.4, at all ranges of tonality, and I'm not really noticing any fixed-pattern noise, and the gradient banding is just plain gone.

It's like a whole new camera. Almost every reservation I had, is now resolved!

I think a new camera deserves a new name. From now on, the GH1, shall be known as the GH13, in honor of Tester13!

Not only a new name, but a full new round of testing: resolution, dynamic range, motion/artifacting, and color. I'm amazed by these results. Going to purchase my first gh13 shortly.

I like the sound of GH13!

Also, I can't wait to see the night-time stuff! I'm not sure how the bit-rate could fix fixed pattern noise...but I'm sure hoping you're right!

And Kholi...that's it, we've just got to get wider...and maybe faster. I believe Zeiss has some 10mm lens for your PL mount adapter, faster than f2....only around 12 grand, hahaha!

Unless Barry changed his settings, these seem to be the best settings that are going around. But i've heard that it will jam 720p settings. Too much data.

I think those are the settings I used. I have no idea how it could be affecting fixed pattern noise, and I'd laugh at anyone who suggested it. However, I'm just sayin', looking at my footage, and at circumstances that I'm pretty sure would have easily caused it before... I'm not seeing it. At least, I'm not noticing it.*

That's why I'm asking folks to be on the lookout for it.

I used to be able to invoke it so easily; just point it at some skin and then gradually stop down until about 3 stops underexposed, and the blue/purple lines would start showing up. But I just ran that test and ... either I've got rose-colored glasses on, or ... it's not as visible.

And the skies and flat surfaces are much, much better at resisting gradient banding.

Note, this is all 1080p AVCHD with the "D" settings; I haven't bothered with MJPG because with the cards I've got, I can only get a second or two. Gotta get some Sandisk Extremes.

*okay, one other thing -- I haven't been viewing the footage via playback from the camera, and that's what I used to do. Since I moved recently, I can't find my darn mini-HDMI cable, so I've been playing the footage through the SD slot on my blu-ray player. Is it possible that that's somehow making the FPN not show up? Doubtful, but I'm just saying it for full disclosure, that that is a variable that's different from my prior testing.

Just want to make sure, but you meant 84.000.000 for Video Buffer right? I don't see 85.000.000 in the drop down in Ptool 3.36 running in Winebottler.

hey Barry, could you address whether or not the 29.761 is going to have any affect on editing? I don't see it doing anything, but I'm not nearly educated enough to make any guesses.

I did this test earlier today, sorry if there isn't more it started poring rain after the last shot. I can't believe the amount of detail that is coming out of this camera.

D setting

clip1 28.4 mbps 1080p24n

Would love to see that ISO 1600 footage Barry!! :dankk2:

Here here. GH13. GH1(3). I'm proud of it.

Can't believe how new the camera feels and how much I miss just having it.

PL Mount on the way and need to get some fast glass.

That's one thing I wanted to hear about, FPN and Low Light material. Sounds like it's mildly confirmed, though.

tomorrow I'll use your settings with a Class 10 Card and plug in Pappas' as well.

Banding is still present in exactly the same amount on my camera, however my camera has been through the "burn in" and the colored banding was greatly reduced at that time. At 1600 and 3 stops underexposed I get the same purple/yellow blinky lines I've always had at that setting after burn in.

A B C D E settings

A B C D E settings

Ok, I've scoured this forum for the proper source for the A B C D E settings referenced all over the place. Guess I'm just dumb.. I can't locate the settings for these anywhere.

Would someone please be kind enough to direct me to the postings for the ABCDE settings?

Much appreciated

Chris

1600 ISO with a 50mm f/1.4 lens outdoors tonight looked pretty good, but not a quantum leap over what I was getting before. There's definitely still FPN and the usual noise, but the improved bitrate makes it look more appealing. Neat Video could probably clean it up to where it looked damn good.

I'll upload a sample but it's gonna be a couple hours probably.
