AVCHD format conversion for YouTube?

Hi

I"ve been trying to post some simple video clips from a Mac(in iMovie) onto YouTube, video was shot on a Panasonic point&shoot so is AVCHD

After waiting through upload to youtube there's a message that upload failed re something like "try using one of the accepted formats"

Am wondering what format and conversion process is necessary and if there's a particular software that's best for that

I'm on a PC and know nothing about iMovie, but it must have some sort of mp4/h264 output option. Youtube supports that format. I have used .wmv files for upload and they also look good.
